Well 2020 was a disappointment for sure, the fact that I managed a few trips out was a bonus, but not a pull apart from trout. The trip to the Dee was enjoyable despite the monsoon weather, a trip I hope to repeat this coming year. I also hope to fish another river new to me, not sure which yet, possibly the Spey once I've been vaccinated. I hope to get out after a Grayling over the winter, but as Perthshire is still out of bounds, I shall have to wait and see what next year brings. Anyway, wishing those that still visit this site a Merry Christmas and hope Santa brings you something good.

Sadly looking like another lockdown is on it's way until we all get a vaccination jab.

You'll be fine for travelling to the Esk's once they open Burnie. Cheers.

Hope the link works. blogs.gov.scot/marine-scotland/2021/01/05/guidance-for-anglers-during-coronavirus/?fbclid=IwAR2TbPsLB60zQnkehL6wIolXwzGmigOfPKg4byL_bMs7tPI8p0JP1m8oRToThis is the interesting bit. "You can travel for local outdoor sport or exercise such as angling but must stay within the more general requirements with regard to travel and ensure that you abide by the rules on meeting other households. In general, stay as close to home as possible – within your local authority, or no more than 5 miles from the boundary – and stay away from crowded places". So, I live in Angus. The Perthshire border is within 5 miles of where I live. Can I go fishing in the Dunkeld area which is approx 30 miles away ? Just curious as to what others think. Cheers A.

The more I think about it it's looking like they mean going no further than 5 miles into a new county which, in a fishing sense, for me means the Isla at Coupar Angus, So Esk and right bank only of the North Esk (going by the Angus boundaries).
Interestingly, if I were to travel to fish the right bank of the North Esk (which is within my county and my understanding of the current rules) the distance I would travel would be far greater than if I were to fish around Dunkeld.
Hey - ho.
On a different note, if this freeze continues and the water levels and temperatures remain low the lower Tay beats will benefit as they did a few years ago when we had arctic conditions through November and December - 2010 maybe ? It's not like there was a bigger run as such - it's just that they were stacking up after each tide and weren't travelling much further upstream than the Catholes area - from memory. Wish I lived in Stanley. Cheers A.

Not really sure what's happening on Tay. Certainly nothing much being reported apart from a couple of sea trout. I know some beats are taking bookings but I would imagine only from those living within the are / region. Some beats, I believe, aren't taking bookings at all. Like I said earlier, I'm doubly hacked as I cant travel 20 miles to fish the Tay but can travel 40 miles to fish the North Esk - apparently. Still no happy. A.

I don't think they'd be happy if we went more than 5 miles at the minute, I'm waiting for my vaccination before I make any plans. I could walk down to the beach for some sea fishing, but I haven't bothered.

A friend who lives on the banks of the Tummel was telling me that there has not been a fish off the river so far. He is a fishing guide/casting instructor and a very knowledge person. Bob.

Did your friend mention if there are many members fishing the Tummel just now Bob ? Just curious. Cheers A.

There are a few members out but not a sign of a fish yet. Have a feeling that it is more the shortage of anglers that is the main problem. Bob.

Having now had my first vaccine jab, I'm now informed my second one will be early April, so given a need for 2 weeks wait for it to get cooking, it would seem I may miss a chance at a Spring fish, oh well a nice fat Grilse will do nicely, that's assuming we are allowed out by then, need to find my fly tying gear and my mojo.....................

We've not quite got a clear indication as to when we can travel a distance to fish, but if the numbers keep going down, I might have to start sorting the kit out just in case.

A few sea trout starting to appear and the salmon run seems to be picking up after the cold spring weather.

Enjoying my trout fishing despite the cold winds. Had ice forming on the rod rings from the wind. The river fishing is a gamble at the best of times. Should be getting some nice sea trout but nothing. There are nets working at the mouth of the river for the sea trout which seams wrong to me when we return all we catch. Would like to know how they only catch sea trout now when years ago fishing the same tides they got plenty of salmon. Bob.
