So consider this hypothetical situation: You fish a long season, like the Tay for example, with spring as well as summer and autumn opportunities. You are able to fish any fly pattern and can choose either dressed hooks or tubes but you are restricted to only 3 sizes, eg 1 inch copper tube, #7 and #13 hooks. You may fish any density of line. So my question; what would you choose to cover most eventualities?

I'm probably not the best example here, but I tend to use more doubles than tubes in summer and tubes spring and autumn, now this is mostly on a smaller river, the South Esk. When fishing the Tay at Waulkmill I was given big Waddington flies some 10 years ago, are they still used? I tend to go traditional colour wise, black and yellow goes into yellow and red, which goes into red in the autumn. So hair wings spring, feather and hair in the summer and Snaelda types in the autumn. I keep being told to use Sunray shadows more, I have a couple, but never really given them a proper go. My most successful fly is probably a flame thrower on a #10 double I tied myself, caught me a few Grilse.

Hi Rob. Initially when I read your post I thought you meant limiting yourself for the entire season to one pattern, albeit in varying sizes. Had this been the case then without a doubt - GBWG. Spring, summer and autumn.
If I were to choose ONLY 3 patterns for the entire year (in varying sizes) it would be Black & Yellow tubes for spring, Silver Stoat's on singles and doubles for Summer, and GBWG tubes for Autumn. Keep it simple. Cheers A.

Like you Andy, the Willie Gunn would likely figure, although I like the look of the Ian Bain Special. Maybe different enough to inspire confidence. Mind you the KK, is that fly at present but I think I'm still blanking on that one 🤣
