...how many have you landed this season and, more importantly, how did it compare to previous seasons or your expectations? I finished on the grand total of 12 all from westcountry rivers. Not my best season but a long way from my worst. Surprisingly I got more last year which was much drier and hotter. Back in April with the temperature pushing the 80's I thought it might be all over before it started. This was followed by my first blank spring week in Sutherland In May I missed all the fun by being in the right place at the wrong time or vice versa but June onwards was much better. Good fish in the mid teens turned up in the Frome (my best around 18lb) which had been missing last season. They were followed by better grilse runs with a few big summer salmon mixed in with them in August. I've not seen these big summer fish before so I expect they all used to end up in the Irish nets. The Exe was a big disappointment for me this year given that we had so much water. I scratched around for three. For some reason the fish refused to run into the upper reaches until the last week of September. My mate had 8 in two days in that week off "my" beat while I was in the Western Isles trout fishing But at least there is a good stock in the river for spawning. Sea trout made a very welcome return this year, I got 29 without ever fishing specifically for them! Included in these was an ugly brute of over 10lb on pike fly a method which also turned up one salmon, so much for small flies in warm clear water! So all in all nothing spectacular for me but a good average season. I know some of you will have caught more in a day than I got all year but I can't catch what's not there! Andy PS. I know the Tweed, Solway, Ayrshire and Cornish guys are still fishing

I know the Tweed, Solway, Ayrshire and Cornish guys are still fishing Hi Exerod, Season all but over in Ayrshire, all the rivers end on at the end of Oct except the Irvine which has a controversial two week extension. Personally I got eight salmon this season, from four rivers, the Ayr, Doon, Girvan and Stinchar. More than happy with the season, not my best but pretty good. Also caught my first Ayrshire sea trout, a finnock, but still notable. To catch a sea trout in Ayrshire is an unusual event, although there were definitely more around this year. At one time there was a night shift of sea trout anglers on the local rivers. As well as enjoying great sport they were a deterrent to the poachers and let the bailiffs and keepers have a night off the watching. Builnacraig

Personally, it has been a great season; However, only a couple of fish for the minimal UK effort. Russia was good to me with 39 for 3 weeks fishing. 1st of these weeks was spectacular with 19 fish to ~31lbs officially (but I feel the weight was less - perhaps only 28-29lb! , and I honestly will not say that I have joined the 30+ club yet). the average for that week of 19 was a staggering 20.7lbs however, the smallest was 15lbs! Add a couple of nice steelhead in BC, and that was it. However, I have a couple of days at the end of next week on upper Tweed & Ettrick so we'll see. It'll be good to have a few casts and a bit of craic anyway. Mike PS. and, of course, I lost a couple of 'monsters' - don't we all? , but these three fish WERE genuine arm-wrenching, 30lb seaguar busting BIG fish! M

This year has been about fishing new beats and meeting new people along with learning new tactics and fishing at night. The numbers have not really been important. So the report is still due. Hornet

On the salmon front. Big fat zero. Probably in the wrong place at the wrong time. Changed my "regular" fishing this year by giving up on the Exe and getting to grips with the Teign instead. I also spent a bit of time on the Dart. Between the 2 AA's thats about 20 miles of fishing and not suprisingly it takes some getting to know. I also had a few odd days here and there including the Wye at Bigsweir, the Tay at Kercock, the Findhorn AA water and the Barle courtesy of Exerod. Not to worry I thought, the Alness won't let me down. A week in late July, high water throughout- lost 2, nothing grassed. Where the grilse late? I think 9 where caught on the 6 beats for the week, so fish where present but it didn't really get going until mid August on the Alness. Total chaos at home put paid to September and my plans to visit the Tweed later this week.
On the plus side I did have six sea trout night fishing which I enjoyed immensely, no monsters, biggest 2 1/2lbs, but on my own tube fly- an enjoyable first!
Hopefully I'm not finished yet. Come the rains I'll trot up to West Dartmoor and the Yealm which finishes Dec 15th.

26 salmon to 20lbs from the Lochy, Spey, Dee, Tweed, Tyne and Wear
23 sea trout to 10lbs from the Tyne, Border Esk and Dee
My best season so far but have done quite a bit of fishing this year and fished some great bits of water. Not very productive though on the days I was there!
Hoping to make it a grand total of 50 tomorrow on Carham or the Annan on Saturday!
Hows your season been fruity - where have you been catching this year?

My good wishes extended to you for the remaining fishing for this year. With such numbers, is it possible that you had a fly which was more favoured by the fish?, and did you find differences on the different waters? Mike

Mike Mike, Thank you I certainly discovered the excellence of an orange/silver allys this summer, it seems that there is something to be said by going back to basics and not complicating things too much. One observation this year is how many fish i have hooked whilst hand lining or similar. One of my lochy fish was caught on my last cast in the pool where i cast a long line and then reeled it in quickly (reely-in cast for a better word). I caught another one doing the same later in the year. Other than that it has just been persistence and a huge commitment to wanting to catch fish (which i think is the norm for a young fisher) Burnt a nasty hole in my wallet too

Total of 26 migratory fish, salmon grilse and seatrout all from Tweed and tributaries. All were taken on the same fly pattern with best salmon 10 1/2 lbs and best seatrout over 7lb. A bonus season due mainly to excellent conditions on association water which kept fish coming through. The old story of being able to take the opportunity of being in the right place at the right time. Most of the summer fish were sea fresh and liced, plus I would miss and loose as many fish as were grassed.

Hello again Tyne Andrew , most anglers I have spoken to seem to have missed and lost more fish this year than any recent experience. Had I been the only victim of long distance release I could have blamed a change in fly dressing style with a longer wing and tail. Perhaps this led to more , offers more fish lost/missed and grassed. As it is I blame the loses for not having a proper ratchet reel during the height of the action. Tweedsider

I managed 31 on Lewis between the last week of July and the first week of October. Best was 11.5lbs and nearly all fresh fish. I reckon I had one for every 4 hours fishing.... (which I think is a better way of deciding if I had a good year). But then, I am lucky in that I can pick my moment. Total cost in permits was about £4 per fish. I didnt mention the Tweed because that was too much, far too much, per fish!

Andy It is a bit better than normal because there were very few fish about earlier in the season (I went sea angling instead). I like to fish for just a few hours at a time when work permits so hours per fish is normal. I tend not to bother with sea trout/finnock but there were reasonable numbers of them about this year.

Had a good year by my standards - 12 salmon & 12 seatrout. Only killed 1 seatrout. Had a few good days on the Dee this summer, my first visit! Best experience was the 4lb seatrout that chased a black n silver snake fly, fished on a floater, 3 times before absolutely smacking it!!! Also, fished Kharlovka and E. Litza in August - monumental!
