Apologies if this has been dealt with before. It arises from fishing the Helmsdale at the start of the season. While fishing with a 1 inch tube I was able to cast it out fairly easily and also get it to turn over reasonable well. However when I put on the inch and a half or two inch tube the result was pretty hopeless. I was using an intermediate line, 10 foot sink tip, with about 4/5 feet of Maxima 20lb. What could I have done to help the situation? Thanks highlandfisher

With the heavier tubes, I would tend to do one of three possible things: 1. Shorten the leader to 2 to 3 feet of the 20lb 2. Alter the leader construction to have a section of 2 feet 30lb bs and then a 2 foot section of the 20lb bs 3. Eliminate the sinking tip (presume this is a multi-tip line, as it would be most unusual to have a sinking tip section on an inty line!), and even then be prepared to shorten the leader as in 1 or 2 above. With a heavier tube of 1.5 to 2" of copper or brass, this surely would eliminate the NEED for a sinking tip on the inty line? However, it is definitely one to play about with, sometimes you would need to even go up a line rating in order for the 'head' to have sufficient 'pulling' power to handle the larger tubes. Me - I don't like the longer metal tubes, and for weight would go with a bottle tube, and, as 'Tip has said before (& it may NOT be pretty ), "wang it oot, & let it come roond"! Mike

I use a sinker with no tip section and around 5 feet of 20lb seaguar casting from one of those useless Hardy Angels that explodes and snaps each time i use it. WG, I was amazed that your reference to casting of wang it oot and let it come roon was not censored. The Wang would be a good name for a line of DH Salmon rods. BTW hows your spinning skills . Cheers Hornet

Mike Sorry guys... wrong info about my setup and Mike was right to pick it up. What I should have said was a 10ft polyleader (and not a 10ft sink tip as I did). Thanks for the suggestions and will work on them. Any others welcome! highlandfisher (novice in definitions too )

STip I have been reliably informed that the new up and coming author from Trout ans Salmon has now taken my Wang it oot phrase for his latest article. Can I not get legal redress? at least a free T&S, I feel a letter to the editor coming on Miffed of Carron.

Have a 17ft. Diawi which throws a two inch tube no bother. Great rod for the days when the water is to high and every one else has gone home. All you have to do is just hold on and it does the rest. Funny thing is that no. of fish per hour this is the most productive rod i have.

Mike, I think you should tie up a new flee and call it the WG Wang. Malcolm, I bet if you were an accepted member of another salmon forum you would have been in the T&S by now . Cheers Hornet

Line is out,,,strip in to where the rod loads,,,lift,,,roll it out directly below,,,and straight into which ever cast you are to perform.
