Last weekend now, thought the season was washed out after the rain earlier in the week, you would have found it difficult to find the river in your photos, all those fields were under water We had talked about trying to start the season earlier next year, the Dee could be a good option, march or april

Salmo.... thanks for the report. Your first picture really captures the atmosphere of the day. It looks to be quite a wide river. Well done on getting into some fish.

It is pretty wide just here but you don't need to cast to far to cover some nice lies. A Snowbee 2D with 62ft head, 8ft leader and 24ft of running line gets just over half way across. The wading is tricky at this height especially if you go under the trees where is a little too deep for comfort. You end up doing the Horizontal Tree Spey Cast ;D ;D ;D I have just returned from the river tonight. Same beat but level has dropped a foot or more. Much easier height. It was calm when I arrived and nothing like the forecast then between setting up the rod and getting to the water the wind start gusting but I persevered and the sun finally came out. There were some fresh fish coming in at this height. Managed to catch a small grilse The fly is the same one I showed above. I have called it a green highlanders variant This is my 3rd or 4th use of JC in a fly so I was pretty please to catch something. I returned the fish to keep my 100% CR. The locals give you very strange looks when you tell them you caught a fish and returned it. salmo (modified head length - incorrectly stated as 52ft should have been 62ft)

Salmo... always good when a fish takes and especially so when it is your own tied fly.

Stu,
On the same night there was an old guy fishing behind me who was into a nice fish so I reeled in and gave him some space to come downstream away from the trees. It was a cracker of a fish, about the same size as yours and it put up a strong fight.
He asked to borrow my net but it was in the car so I volunteered to hand land it when it was ready. Once it turned over I waded in just downstream and when it finally calmed down I reached in and clamped the wrist gently but firmly and with my front positioned at the front lift it carefully up and carried it to the bank. (it was like a pet fish ;D)
The fish was coloured but in great shape and I carefully laid it down to allow him to get the hook out. It then realised it was on dry land and started thrashing so I turned him upside down and handed him over to the guy.
I was expecting it to go back but e just said thanks and knocked it there and then. I may as well as used a gaff but at least he had the option.
I asked him how many that made it for the season and he said it was his 53rd. In the 12 week season he would have to eat 4 plus per week which is not realistic . My guess is that he probably sells them.
Interestlingly, though he only uses 2 flies of the same pattern. 1 tube and 1 treble. Silver body with some red and brown wing with GP over wing and blue throat. Some JC cheeks as well. Nice looking combo and obviously it was looking a bit ragged. He said he as used it for many years and it has tallied over 600 salmon. I will try and get a picture next time.
I always get a hint of fly envy when someone else is catching one - you know it is. ;D

That was very good of you to help him out,the guy sounds familier, You should tye a few flies up that look something like, fish wont know the differance
We walked past a guy fishing the top of Kleivane, when we came back,he was just packing up,said he had got one 6 kilo fin og blank(nice and silver),i thought farm fish, there was a number around and they were still silver, not so many that size are still silver at this point of the season, so when he took it out of the bag,it turned out to be a coloured cock fish, smoker he said, this guy only used or used most a sunray shadow type fly
It is common for folk to sell the catch and not be shy to brag about it,i have been asked if i will sell my fish-why do you put them back?is the next question
I had 75% C+R,one i killed was a farmed salmon

Was the 1025kg all yours ;D ;D Overall it looks like a dramatic improvement in numbers. People reading may not realise that Tengs is just the lowest mile or so of the river the equivalent of one or at most two beats on a conventional river so to take 37% of the whole catch is pretty amazing. Equally amazing is that only approx. 4,7% of this is CR. Just imagine what the river would be like if even 50% were returned. salmo

I cant take credit for all the fish returned, you put yours back as well ;D.
What is interesting is that the average size of fish this year is over 3 kilos, whereas normal is around 2-2.5 kilo
Its a shame the netting operations still goes on, if they stopped, the returns could be around 20 ton every year
Tengs includes fotlands as well,so a few more km`,but still compared to the 50 km that is the river bjerkreim above, thats a lot of fish

Well done salmo, this rig duty sounds like a good posting. ;D I drew the short straw and had rig duty over Christmas week so I had to plan to be in Norway at least until Dec 28. The family came over to join me. Luckily the weather was bad and there were no operations ongoing. The weather looked a bit like this video was taken on the same drill ship a few weeks ago. Sea-state 30 metre maximum waves. The helideck had a 30 m heave and the bridge window is about 30 m above the sea. Look at the video around 3 min 30 secs ;D ;D

That is a great result for the river to come 4th in Norway. I heard it got into the top 6 some years back but I don't know if it ever got that high up the table before??

I think the river always comes in the top ten,but no never so high before 4 is outstanding, the total no of fish caught is 2nd place, You could be more likely to catch in Bjerkreim than the big better known rivers, though not the size of fish most visitors talk about when coming to Norway,

Hi Stu,
On the 31st I caught the NRK documentary on the which showed the Duke of Roxburghe on the Alta. Then later saw the midnight opening on the Gaula. Pretty boring watching people spin but the community spirit looked good. ;D ;D ;D
Noone was catch much around midnight but next morning I turned it on and immediately saw this guy landing a good size salmon.
See you on the river one of these days ;D
