Yes, there were not too many Spey lines on the go even 10 years ago, they have certainly been a big improvement, as have modern multi-tip lines.

As much as you know my love for a good spey line I'm not sure how many more fish they put on the bank( AND THERE IS A NEW THREAD), any how if I was going baCk 10 years A few DT'S and some running line I'd make my own - that's how it all started.

Reasonably prices waterproof digital cameras. Mike Given that for a lot of people this will make C&R a lot more palatable this is a very astute observation, nice one. Lamson

Graham - as a man of many rods, would you say there has been much improvement in DH rods the last 10 years?
I'd say single hand rods have gradually improved, e.g Sage RPL to XP to Z Axis, but perhaps DH rods have improved more dramatically?

There has been some improvement by some manufacturers. Saying that I still rate my Loomis IMX as one of the best rods out there (except for heavy sunk line fishing) and it is about 14 years old. It is lighter than almost all of the 15ft rods currently on the market as well. As for Sage single handed rods, I personally prefer the RPL's, I dont think there has been any significant improvement as an allround fishing rod since then.

What about the Z-pey then, with its 'revolutionary' handle. I just noticed that the banner add for this rod includes the phrase "Get used to it" - well, I'm not sure that many people are convinced yet, except those who accept their sponsorship (& presumably a lifetime supply of rods!) Mike

I know what you mean, and I've heard others say the same about RPLs. I moved over to winston rods from sage about 5 years ago because I thought the new sages (XPs) were too tippy for sea trout. The winston rods (BL5) I now use are more middle to tip, but still with a fastish action.

Sage , in my view very guilty of cynical marketing eg a new model every few years , often different rather than better = sell more product , in built obselescence etc. One reason I gave up on them. Also in this time of original purchaser life time ,any reason warranty's best they get traded in asap. Yours in cynical mode Lamson

I think rods, both single and DH, are now as light as they need to be and any improvement over the next 10 years is likely to be minimal.
I think carbon fibre is a great material for rods, but perhaps someone will improve it somehow to make it less prone to impact damage.

You mean rods made from carrots. ;D
Poly leaders have made a big impact over the last 10 years, used to make tips from old sinking lines, but the polyleaders are much finer, useful in lower water when presenting smaller flies.

Reasonably prices waterproof digital cameras. Mike I'd agree with that. I don't have one but I know I need one, and wait for a splashproof iPod and Phone. M

we all enjoy dressing up in the gear and enjoying the "greatoutdoors" ;D And just what gear are we talking about You may enjoy wearing fishnet stockings and a Gimp mask however the handcuffs play havoc with a Double Spey. Try Velcro, softer to the touch, no rope "burns", and the bonus of never having to call out the Fire Brigade because you lost the key. Is this where you get all your "fashion" tips from then?
