When preparing fish for the table (any species) what food items have you found in their stomachs, other than the expected flies, larva etc.? Years ago the 2 Newts i found in the stomach of a large brownie certainly put my Mum off her tea ;D Salmon are supposed to not eat when in our rivers, however I am sure people have seen "evidence" that they on occasion do.

I remember my son once catching a large trout with a huge toad in its belly. Many years ago I caught a pike with a whole duck in it. I have the photo somewhere and will post it if I can find it.

I have seen pictures of salmon (caught on the fly) with their guts crammed with little insects and larvae.
I subscribe to the theory that salmon do not each much in fresh water rather than not at all. I think they just stop feeding as voraciously as they would at sea. The gut is documented to shrink but there is still room for some snack material.

I've had a 1 1/4 lb brownie which had 5 salmon smolts in it's belly, which must have been around 1/4 of it's body weight.

I caught a 1lb 8oz brown trout once from a remote loch with a blackbird stuck in its gullet. It had obviously been there for a while cos the head was large while the rest of the fish's body was very thin. The amazing thing was that despite the massive obstruction in its throat, it was still prepared to go for one of my little flies.
