If c/r is the way forward why don't owners give cheaper fishing for c/r. After all the more fish in the river the more the owners will charge to fish their water. That's the best idea I have heard in a long time. Why not simply charge people £50 or £100 oer day extra if they want to chap the fish? If this was the case CR would be 99% ;D ;D salmo If the discount were the cost of the chapped fish levy there would be no loss of income . to use the dreadul phrase it wold be a win,win situation.

If I'm not mistaken the levy is per fish chapped or not. My point is the levy makes not one pennysworth encouragement to return fish. Is that not daft ? M

I think we are talking about simply charging people for taking fish home.
Most of us are hardly fishing for subsistence and some people will think twice about killing a fish if they have to pay £5 per lb ;D

Mike, Good effort on the data front. I am happy to chip in with the cost if you want. VC I have been given access to the 2001-2006 figures for Salmon Fishing in Scotland from FRS, and they are sending out by snail mail the 1994-2000 publications by year. Although I offered to pay, they are not going to charge, saying that they are happy someone is to make use of the stats. I'll make a modest donation to the FRS anyway. Once the paper reports are in, I'll work on the figures, and it will give us 1994-2006 (14 years of stats) noting that 1994 was the first year that any catch & release figures were collected. Although they have stats for the fishing effort of the commercial salmon fishing sector, up to date they do not ask for estimates of fishing effort from the rod fishieries, so these figures are simply not available from any central source. I'll report back later about the stats on the salmon fishing (rod & line) on this forum thread. It is heartening to see that since the message went out a few days ago, we have increased the numbers voting in the poll from 35 to 74, with great thanks to all who have so far voted on the C&R poll for the Tay. Good luck for your salmon fishing in 2008. Mike

A healthy 80 replies on the poll, and the vast majority in favour of a C&R policy for the Tay more generous to the fish than has been the case right up to 2007.
More to come regarding stats on the Scottish river systems C&R since 1994 - work in progress.
May all on the forum suffer to catch many more salmon when fishing in 2008, and put a better % of them back!

Thanks to all who voted on this poll. A disappointing outcome at the AGM - jut a variation on the previous years policy IMO. At least with the votes on the 2 forums, there is a significant majority of fishermen who have the interests of the river at heart, and along with initiatives such as the TWCP we can make change happen despite the Board. I am sure the debate will continue in other forms - looking forward to the figures from Speyducer and the initial report from the TWCP Thanks again. Main points below:- The TDSFB for Season 2008 now recommend that: Start of Season until the 31st of May: The 1st fish caught each day by each individual angler must be released. Each individual angler then has the option of keeping one subsequent fish only, per day. Anglers should not fish with worms during this period anywhere in the district From 1 June until the end of Season: All hen fish to be released. The aim should be to release at least 50% of cock fish caught, in particular cock fish weighing over 15lbs. All coloured fish should be released throughout the year. Anglers should not use worms in September or October in any part of the system where highly coloured fish (spring fish or early grilse) are waiting to spawn'. 'The existing advice is not to fish with worms up to 31 May throughout the district nor after 31 August in any area where spring salmon are waiting to spawn. As many fish are deeply hooked, the Board considers this method of fishing incompatible with the need for conservation'.

A report in todays Dundee Courier by 'angling correspondent' Ken Bell states that "unless beat owners and anglers return more salmon to the Tay next season, stronger measures to enforce the voluntary catch and release code might be considered" (TDSFB statement). Please note the words "might" and "considered" ....... laissez faire (fence sitting) or what ?

STip,
The result is disappointing since it comes from a fear that fishing revenues will decrease if CR is enforced.
Our poll is pretty clear in the results. 61.1% of the vote says 100% CR 85.8% of the vote says 80% CR 96.3% says better than 50% CR
