Say, for a moment, that you were fortunate enough to go on a Bonefish flyfishing trip to some gorgeous & exotic location, like WG who has just returned from one, yet you were extremely unlucky, during that trip, when trying to stop one of those huge runs from a bonefish, such that you sliced the backing so far into your fingers that serious surgery was necessary. When you attended the hospital, it was obvious that several fingers were badly damaged, and the surgeon told you that, in order to save as much as possible, you would have to lose one of your fingers, the 'up-side' being that you could chose which finger would be sacrificed, but that the others would then be returned to normal....... ....which finger would you choose to lose? And why?? Mike

I am assuming that you couldn't elect to lose a couple of toes as way of compromise ? ...... well in that case it would have to be the left hand pinkie which, I believe, is worth in the region of £7000 should you claim it as an industrial injury and would equate nicely with the cost of a reasonable weeks fishing for yourself a 3 buddies - something to think about

Certainly would not like to loose the trigger finger or the one next to it, like the thumb they seem to have a purpose in life. Aye take the pinkie.

Great answer there Kate!!! ;D I think the original idea was spawned (testicles again!!) by Willie Gunn not getting his hand out of the way when a Bonefish made its initial run, and the line sliced into his finger.

I would agree with the pinky finger. Loosing a thumb or middle finger would feel awkward and hamper ones ability . Alternatively fish with a Kevlar mitt as this will prevent the stripping line from burning or slicing your fingers. Cheers Hornet

Aye, Hornet don't lose any fingers on yer right hand bud ,, could be disasterous,, ;D,,,,,, Then again, for a while at least you would have the "lefty" advantage of thinking your hand belongs to another . Any of my fingers go missing and that's the end of my guitar playing so I really daren't even think about it

Just wanted to find out how much forum members knew about which is the LEAST important finger (10 digits, both hands included): Hopefully, no-one here will ever be in that aweful situation, but, it may be good to know. BTW: There is a single CORRECT scientifically proven answer!! Mike

There is a single CORRECT scientifically proven answer!! Dunno the scientific answer, but I do know a guy who lost both the little finger and ring finger on his right hand in an accident as a young child. It seems to affect him very little, and he fishes quite a bit with both single and double handed rods, but he does find it easier to drink a pint from a glass with a handle rather than a straight glass.

Would it be the one next to the pinky on your wrong hand (left hand if you are right handed).

Would it be the one next to the pinky on your wrong hand (left hand if you are right handed). No, the left ring finger to which you are referring (as a Right hander) is NOT the one, as this would leave a gap between pinkie & middle fingers, and small things in the hand (eg loose change) would fall through the gap. This should give you a clue as to which finger would be the least intrusive to lose..... ....or it should. M

Must be the left pinky then (for a RH person).
Can't be the left thumb, I use that for retrieving line!

Mrs Tip reckons its the index but being a hardened 'husband pointer' its the one she would like to lose least.
