Mrs Tip reckons its the index but being a hardened 'husband pointer' its the one she would like to lose least. & I'll bet it's on her non-dominant hand, so she can keep her Right in reserve to belt you! ;D ;D Mike

I've had experience of this and its not so funny a subject to me at least.
See my post under that atrocious poll - it reminds of Godfather Two but that was with a head of course.

The Scientific Argument:
Given the choice, which may be hyothetical in this instance, you would wish to select the loss of the digit which will have the least functional detriment to the hand.
Therefore:
You don't select either thumb, as the thumb is, in effect, 'half' of the useful hand.
You don't select any of the 'central' fingers - ie the middle or the ring fingers, as loss of any one of these on either hand will result in a gap between the remaining fingers, which cannot be compensated for however you hold the hand or adapt, and you will drop things between the gap eg. loose change/money.
So, the selection comes down to either one or other of either the index finger or little (pinkie) finger.
You don't select either little finger as this is the finger which is most useful in the generation of power grip in the hand for objects like a hammer or tennis racket.
So, now the choice is between one or other of the index fingers....
You DO select the dominant side (Right side for a Right hander) index finger, as, being the dominant hand, you will be best able to make adaptive adjustments with that hand because it is your dominant hand, and you will simply and easily transfer all previous functions of the lost dominant index finger to the next adjacent finger, ie the middle finger.
The loss of the dominant hand index finger will, therefore have the least overall effect on the continued functioning of the hands, and should be the one selected .... if you had a choice!

The Scientific Argument: Given the choice, ...................................... Mike The Best Choice for Evolution PETA(people engaged in thumbs up .............sMike , thats is a very useful analysis and I shall use that next time I rough with the mafia, then immediate decisions are sometimes required and there is no time for "reflexion". But as a designer I am asked to either design in the general (for hotel, general residential use eg.) or for the individual (for the bath with view fetish eg.) When it comes down to fingers (and I hope to choose toes first) I feel the choice is inevitably specific and not generic. Your analysis would correctly identify the aggregate correlation of logical choice but who among us fishers knows what that means? Spock put your hand up, but then you are biased by your pointy ears - no need for a finger there. I would say if you trap the line for the take - keep that one (thats the one recommended for shearing I think). If you p*ck your nose and thats more important than the take - keep that one but combine it with a frontal lobotomy for some discount. If you fish single bank keep two adjoining for sure. If you point at spelling mistakes in admin I'd suggest thats the best one to go. But which hand Mike do you tie flies with and are you prepared to suffer crap fies for 6 months whilst the other finger adapts? For sure you set the standard with all fingers and the how-to posts are IMHO JDB = just dead brilliant. But we might all get a little fed up with "Fluffy Pink Poodle with varnish dip" being posted on account of this adaption thing ? And which finger will you push the shutter (sic) with. Every second shot (sic) might be missed and we may never know how to dress that fly. (Admin please do not change the vowels ). In my experience the one to choose is without doubt the one used for prints at my last chat with the constas. That is the constabulary. Its the commercial choice. Or is it the finger used to list 100 last posts - now that is a commercial decision. And what about the finger used to press "make booking" on the FishTweed Lower Floors booking window - has that finger not gone AWAL anyways ? But without doubt the most valuable fingers are both pinkies. These are the essential digits for undoing brass traps - no thumb required but a degree of finesse in my experience. If you lost either one things could go completely out of control. I had such an experience whilst recovering from a rugby pinkie in Aberdeen - once she picked herself up boy was she annoyed. Oh, and the thing about middle fingers retaining loose change. I am sure gillies up and down the country would not mind a bit if their clients would turn up with these fingers missing, and indeed at a cost could offer this service either before or after exchange of monies at the end of the day.
