I suppose 7 sea licers on your first day out is respectable - especially after a 2 month drought

That's a fantastic day's sport Marty, and it's good to see that you showed restraint and just kept two.
Having said that, I think you've just answered your original question!
I'm guessing you were fishing a lower/tidal beat - were you able to see the fish take the bait, as you mentioned before?

There is no reason to ban a method because it is successful. However, there is SERIOUS concern when any 'fisherman', with whatever method, kills all his catch, and when that happens to be 6 fish, it could be described as greedy. And that would greedy for something other than food on the table! However, it would be up to the relevant fisheries board to guide / rule on / create laws which are at least somewhat protective to the fish stocks, so that there are future fish stocks to fish for. Catch & Release may be a more recently used 'buzz phrase', but the practice of this appears to be filtering down very slowly into the mindset and attitude of some 'fishermen'. Whilst not banning any particular method, or preventing individuals from taking a fish for the pot, if I were to place some control on such matters, it would be a 'kill-tag' system as currently in operation in Eire, and that would have an absolute limit of 10 fish (non-transferable) per fisherman per annum for the entire country (not county!) the licence is valid for. Hi John As Mike says, its not the method that should be banned - its the fisher.

on the foyle system at the moment anglers get 25 tags per season ,5 for springers and 20 for the rest of the season, anglers are allowed to take a max of 3 fish in one day, in my opinion thats about 20 tags too many, but as the foyle is legaly netted for 6 weeks each summer locals do not take kindly to being told to return fish whilst the draft nets are slaughtering them.

So, until the law is changed on both counts (commercial summer netting, and the number of tags issued & the relevant sub-laws adhered to), the 'fisherman' who killed all 6 fish in one day is breaking the law. It appears that, again on both counts, neither the commercial netsmen nor the irresponsible angler is doing the Foyle system any favours, and it is your children & grandchildren who may inherit a barren river system. Petition for a change in the relevant laws - other countries and systems have been successful in so doing, and hopefully may be experiencing a resurgence of wild silver forging upstream to spawn.
