This hardback version was first published in 1984. It has been revised several times and the edition I have was reprinted in 1998. The book is substantial and has 448 pages. It contains 9 colour plates and over 100 photos and numerous diagrams. The book is available in paperback, and has a sister book on Sea Trout. The softback is readily available from most of the larger tackle dealers and obviously from Amazon e.t.c. This book always has a mixed response from people with many regarding it as a classic, must-have book. Reviews please.

Widely considered the bible of salmon fishing for a number of years it became a respected milestone in salmon fishing literature, like all milestones, with a few decades of advancement they begin to show their age in a new light.

I try to read it cover to cover, time after time. Every time I do, it makes more sense and more falls into place. Good book, well written. I'm looking forward to the HF biography due out later in the year.

For me, Falkus was first and foremost an inspirational writer , no mean gift, he could have made the Highway Code a rivetting read .

"inspirational writer", I'd agree regarding the book, but....
He once made some signs for an estate he was working at, on one lot he wrote "P*@# off or you will be electrocuted", and on others he couldn't be bothered with "No tresspassing" so simply made some that said "F@#* O££". They made the point without messing about.

On a serious note though: a superb book by a great, insipational writer, although i'm still reading...
