I have just received a New Year message from Sportfish, accompanied by a photograph of a "nice winter brown trout", held in the hands of an angler on the the snow covered bank of a river.
Welcome though the New Year good wishes are, the choice of image is perhaps ill-considered. I would urge others, particularly those new to our sport, who have received this message, to bear in mind that it is illegal here to fish for brown trout during the winter months. I sincerely hope that this message does not encourage Sportfish customers to risk prosecution by specifically targeting these fish, which should be left to recover from their recent spawning efforts, before the beginning of the trout season in March. A grayling would have been much more appropriate.

Whoever typed up the advert was perhaps still suffering from the aftereffects of the new years celebrations. I notice that they say it is going to be an existing year, rather than an exciting year. ;D

I thought that when I saw it. No fishing there just now, so must be on a river where there are some grayling. Possibly the Tay.

Good assumption Graham and one I would concur with for the same reasons. It has a Murthly / Stenton feel to it for me in terms of the scale of the water and banking (could be the Garth pool) ...... but purely a guess.

Can't be the Spey Malcolm, look at the waders, far too down market!
Don't know much about the advert but could it not be a photo taken in previous years whilst there was still snow on the ground. Perahps even after 15th March.
I don't think for one moment that anyone would specifically target Brown Trout out of season but you are totally correct of course John, they should be more careful and a grayling should have been their choice.
Great personal contribution to the C&R thread by the way.
