No, I haven't caught one yet, but May has arrived and my thoughts will be turning to sea trout towards the end of the month - by that I mean fishing at dusk and into the darkness.
Sea trout are already being reported in some Scottish rivers, so let us know when you catch your first of the season.
Tippy - we can't go to the pub on Saturday 17 May until somebody has caught a sea trout, even if it means missing the bingo. ;D

I had my first trip out last night, on the Dart. To be honest I'd only gone out to try and come to terms with the shock of losing 4:1 to Exeter in the Conference play offs. Needless to say my heart just wasn't in it. Walked a good bit of river I'm yet to fish, so maybe next time!

Commiserations about the footie result Rob, a real West Country derby as well.
You should take your rod next time, I've heard the SW rivers get an early run of sea trout............it could be you!

John - if all else fails a wee No1 mepp fished in an upstream manner should ensure we make it for "eye's down". But seriously folks ..... a wee brandling worm on a 'stewart tackle' would do the biz just as well. Thinking about going for my first 'all nighter' of the season on the South Esk in the next week or so as we should start to see evidence of early sea troots (usually guid fish) any time now. "Hentool" (the silent one) had a braw fish of the Southie about this time last season if memory serves.

Yes, thats right. The Dart has had a few already, and the Teign. Today felt like summer, so with some warmer nights, we are approaching the time. Some big sea trout off the dart last year, so who knows.....

I might have my first night session for sea trout over the weekend, if the evenings stay warm. A bit early yet, but you never know, there might be some big ones sneaking up river at night. Looking forward to getting a good bend in my new 10' Winston rod, a bargain in the Sportfish winter sale. We'll probably have a prize competition for the best sea trout story of the season, so don't forget to take your cameras boys.

Sea trout being caught now on the upper reaches of the Teign. I'll be out over the weekend hopefully. It's still quite chilly mind.

A nice phat 3 1/2 pounder was taken today by one of eskimoo's guests on the South Esk at Cortachy - at 11.30 am !! Low water and a clear blue sky - sacrilege. ;D

I once turned up at Park South to meet the fishing guests of a friend who had the beat for the week. I was wearing office clothes and they were all sitting on the bench at Durris stream saying it was too hot.
I took a 2 1/2 pounder on the second cast immediately after the ghillie unhooked the fly from the bank on my first cast ;D
Very bright sun, low water, office clothes, 2 nd cast - now that's sacrilege ;D ;D ;D

First "fish on" last night. Lovely warm night on the Dart, until about midnight when the weather changed. Maybe next time he'll stick. A HUGE sea trout showed itself at last light to really get the pulse racing!

The lower beats on the North and South Esks now showing the first pods moving up river, the mouth of the Northy had 7 end of last week, so with this rain coming and the sub tropical temperatures just now they should start to show in good numbers, hopefully!!!!!

Thanks for the info eskimoo. Hopefully we will have a noticeable run of fish if the forecast of rain amounts to anything more than quick swallie for the weeds. I wonder what kind of crystal ball Martin Stansfeld has that he can predict three seatrout being caught this coming Wednesday from his Kinnaber water on the North Esk (see Fishesk - Week So Far). BTW - I see Martin has his Fortesk estate up for sale - complete with "mock baronial castle and Japanese water feature" ! regards STip

I guess he is just trying to add value with predictive returns so he gets a quick sale before the castle comes tumbling down!!!!!!

Cortachy Castle. South Esk. June 6th 08.Not the first of the season - that happened on Wednesday night when I hooked 4, landed and returned 3 in the 2-3lb class .... and lost a thumper. This one was caught last night and chapped, but in comparative terms it was 'quiet' compared to the volume of traffic seen on Wednesday night. Eskimoo lost what looked like it might have been a guid fish at first light this morning. Hornet gave it his best shot but unfortunately blanked on this occasion. Considering the near drought conditions just now on the South Esk it was really quite amazing to see fresh fish (salmon included !!) running the river after dark - and indication of a continuing dry spell perhaps ?? A modest few inches on the guage should herald the start of the runs in earnest. regards STip
