I have just got around to reading Saturday's Daily Mail which features a double page feature by a woman reporter upon the heroic fight of two Aberdeenshire poachers to have an inderdict granted 40 years ago, banning them from the river side overturned. Basically the feature tells of the daring working mans fight against the evil landlords who do not want the common people to take "their" fish. Unfortunately the picture of the pair is taken against a signboard depicting, "PRIVATE A.A.A. Fishing. A fishery for the working man! As usual when dealing with country sports matters the paper appears to have sent their most guillable inexperienced reporter who has apparently done no research into the state of Scotlands salmon stocks, nor the importance of the rod and line fishery to many rural communities. The picture editor also requires a firm boot in the posteria for depicting what is obviously a very poor conditioned kelt.

In another paper, same two men were reminising about how they would rip the fish out with the biggest hook they could get their hands on, and that this was somehow romantic and skillful. Ah, bless their little cotton socks!! Big nasty landowners stopping them having their fun, and stopping them teaching their grand children how to do it.
I agree with the point about papers sending out their most inexperienced staff to cover environmental issues. This IS a big problem, especially in the deer world, but a lot of other countryside issues as well.

Swift,
The stories in question where in broadsheets who should have known better, Scotsman, P & J etc etc. Tabloids ignore these kinds of stories.
