As a new member it's time to break silence with a big thank you to Speyducer. I'm new to fishing and new to flytying and I've been following the excellent SBSs on the site. I tied up the hairwing single posted by Speyducer and took it to the river Eden today and caught my first salmon with it -Wow! I'm now looking for my next pattern - or perhaps I'll just tie up this pattern in diminishing sizes for the forthcoming warmer months Anyway, a big thank you to the man. JD

jd, I am very humbled by your praise. However, I am immensely heartened knowing that you have reviewed and followed some of the tying SbS's, and absolutely delighted that not only have you had the confidence to fish with a tying from your own hand, but that you managed that ultimate christening - your first salmon. May this be the start of a lifelong passion for the fine art of fly fishing and the tying that goes with it for those that are so inclined. My best of wishes for your continued successes for the 2008 season, and do keep us informed. A wee story of your capture will sit very well in the Story of the Month. best regards always, Mike

Well done your first salmon JD, that's early for an Eden springer.

Now, are you sure it was a springer?
I had a novice friend who claimed to get 4 on opening day on the Tyne - kelts are very similar looking.
Not meaning to sound bad, but it is a good learning point.
Welcome to the forum

Does the Eden still open Jan 15th? If so it must be the earliest opening English river, if not the first to produce. Well done jd.

OOps! First post, first fish and a big fib.
No, sorry guys, it wasn't a springer, it was a kelt. Now that I know the difference and the significance I'll be rather more careful in my language.
Thanks for the replies and I'll let you know when ( or more likely if ) I manage the real thing.
