I spoke today with one of the few netting proprietors left on Tweed, he was emphasising the lack of grilse. There are some small salmon on the go, which under new marketing size/price structure are being called grilse. My friend is adamant that these are not one sea winter fish as they do not shed their scales in typical grilse fashion. I see all Scottish rivers are on their bones just now but has anyone in the north came across true grilse this summer?

Hi Tweedsider, I saw heeps at the Falls of Feugh on Saturday. The Feugh is a trib of the Dee. Some of the Grilse we saw were really, really small, 2lb tops and some others looked about 6lb. Last week a few small grilse in the 3lb range were caught at Pert on the North Esk. None were reported with bleeding vents which hopefully is a good sign compared to last years run. I think with todays heavy down pour in the Angus area it may put a few inches on the North & South Esk rivers. More hope than anything I hope nobody was tackling up when the crazy fork lightning started Cheers Hornet
