On Friday past I fished two different rivers, one was up by a couple of feet, at least, whereas the other was still running at very low summer level. I caught (?) a fish on both rivers both about 3 to 4 lbs. One was foul hooked on its under belly (no idea how on earth that was possible) whereas the other was caught cleanly in its mouth. One fly was a size 12 black and yellow number and the other one was a size 8 willie dog conehead. The black and yellow number had been in the box for a while and only fished on the odd occassion. The conehead was last used in the spring time (April) and was last seen hanging from a small tree on the cliff face on the other side of the river. (I was fishing that side at the start of summer and it was still there so I retrieved it.) The double hook of the small black and yellow number was sharp whereas the double from the conehead was weather beaten and slightly corroded. It's colours were faded. The fish in the first river was a surprise. The one later on in the day was less of a surprise (just as lucky though). I told another fisherman not 5 minutes earlier, 'I'm going to catch a fish tonight'. I don't think I have said that before. Fishing for Salmon?! hf

Well done on the fish, HF. Just shows you it's a funny old game - using flies from the bottom of one's box, or even a battered corroded & discoloured one from the trees... Begs the question....why do I tie new flies??? just tie anything on & fish at the right depth when there are fish about!! I need a drink & a lie down, not necessarily in that order! Mike

HF,
You were supposed to say it was down to sheer skill !!!
Two different flees, two different rivers resulting in two fish.
Sounds like you had a braw time ;D

Nice double HiFi.
Are you going to tell us which rivers they were or is it a secret?

Nice one, I figured one was the Brora, where else would you be able to retrieve a fly from a tree that you had lost months previously ;D
Did you get any photos of the Borgie, it looks like a cracking river.

Last night, I wasn't able to go out fishing till about 8.30pm which only gave me about 1hr fishing time.
I guess I was in a bit of a hurry to get going. You've probably guessed it but as I was going from the grass bank down to the stony river bed (tide not quite fully in) I went head first into about 6"/9" of water and was drenched down the right side. The wellies also took on a good bit of water. ;D
Well no point complaining - just a quick look around and hope no one saw me ;D - and so I got to fishing. The water level was up and so produced a nice draw through the water for the tube/fly. (alistair cascade). I worked my way down the pool when suddenly I realised I was into a fish and a good one at that.
Then began the fight which went on for a good 10 minutes or more. The fish wasn't for giving in and made a number of good runs and also showed no desire for coming in. (no 5).
It was now also getting dark which made it difficult to see but the fish eventually came to the side. What I saw surprised me, as the fish had been hooked on its side which would also accounts for the good fight.
After about 5 minutes of reviving the fish - fresh 8/9lb salmon/grilse - it made its way back into the dark of the water.
Two points to note... 1. In about 4/5 years of fishing I have never foul hooked a salmon and yet in less than one week I have foul hooked two. hmm 2. builnacraig... sorry but the flash bulb wasn't working ;D
Cheers

Good on yi HF, A wee dookin now and again is not a bad thing as it keeps us on our toes regarding wading Bet you were relieved that nobody was around I remember one time when i was troot fishing seeing this boy get the deck chair out on the platform and plank his rear followed by toppling over the side. I nearly fell in with laughter !!! ;D As Stp is an expert in hooking fish in the erse he could explain the dynamics of playing such a fish just in case it happens again . ATB Hornet

Nice to hear 'real' stories & events from the riverbank!! Sorry to hear about the gathered additional river wetness, but it does bring one back to realising that everyone, from time to time & however experienced will make embarrassing human errors! BTW, do 'erse-hooked' fish count on the annual beat returns?? Mike

Mike hornet.. just waiting to hear what STip might have to say on that one... for the beginner and the clown. speyducer... good question and one which crossed my mind. The answer I have is that I don't know. Maybe someone else will be able to help. I wonder though if it should be written down as a foul hooked fish and then also stated that it was released. One other question in connection with this is, 'would it count as a released fish which should be included in official final year figures'? No Answers! hf Aside - I should now go and check my permit!

2. builnacraig... sorry but the flash bulb wasn't working ;D No photo then it doesn't count. Mind you you could hardly make up a story like that. ;D Despite it being foul hooked I am sure that it was rising for the fly, missed and hooked itself on the way down, or are you leaning towards Brora's darkside?
