Afternoon all, Have posted the following thread on the reference books & dvd area that I'd like to draw your attention to in case you want to contribute: (apologies if there is a smarter way of doing this) Topic - NOMINATIONS PLEASE - Top 5 Books "As per earlier thread, can anyone who cares to, add a reply giving the title and author for their favourite 5ish salmon fishing books. Once all the nominations are in I will see if any obvious categories show up and create a poll or polls to see what our top 5ish books are. May help promote some healthy debate or more importantly stop me from spending my cash on drivvel as I build up a collection. Cheers, Nolon."

Fruity That is an excellent bibliography. How do you feel about working through your list, giving each book a review and adding to the lot I started in the Book section? I know it would be a long job but if you did it a bit at a time........................ If others added there penn'orth we would have a grand resource. Robbie

Excellent list, Fruity! Will take a few long winter nights to get through that lot, so I'll wait for the poll. Myself, I have only a few of salmon fishing books, Falkus of course, but I'd have to have a look for the others. I have a load of fly tying books, and will have a think about their relative merits. Falkus; his salmon book is overated, his seatrout book was OK but I would put him well out of the top 5

1. Graesser - Advanced Salmon Fishing 2. Graesser - Finer Points of Fly Fishing For Salmon 3. Currie - Days and Nights of Game Fishing 4. Taverner - Salmon Fishing 5. Pryce Tannat - How to Dress Salmon Flies

Someone else mention Frederick Hill's Salmon Fishing a while ago, presumably "The Greased Line on Dee, Don and Earn", but I can't remember it or find a copy in any room. Now so irritated that I will have to either find it or buy a copy.

For easy bed time reading I enjoyed Bill Currie's books,
Days & Nights of Game Fishing The River Within
I read loads of technical stuff at work so I read at home to relax!
On learning to fish:
Falkus: Salmon Fishing (not as good as Sea Trout)
Baird Keachie - Progressive Fly Fishing For Salmon. (I'd highly recommend this to beginners wanting a better understanding of fly size selection for different conditions)
General Books
Ashley-Cooper - The Great Salmon Rivers of Scotland - probably out of date in many respects, but a good introduction to the big 4 salmon rivers.

Have just edited my list of twenty books, had called "fine and far off" the "finer points of fly fishing for salmon".
I am surprised nobody had commented upon my choice of Graesser, his name normally gets a "mixed" response. Unfortunately I never met or fished with the man.
Interesting that WG chose Philip Green's New Angles on Salmon Fishing, many people have never heard of the book despite it being a thoughtful little cracker.

I liked Graessar's books but after what he and his son did to the Lower Brora he fell a long long way in my estimation.

Briefly, just what did they do? I know he died and a/the son went to Oz or NZ but that is all.

The madman was one of the best pools on the lower river till he decided to "improve " it and design a new pool above the Madman. Now instead of the flow round the island meeting and pushing the main flow from the South bank to the North bank, the flow continues down the South bank. The result is the Northbank has a large deep dead area`and the South bank has the current is directly below their feet, it no longer holds fish. Other pools ruined include The Otter, The Ford, The Rawlen, Benzie and the Pots, the Upper pot is totally dry.
After a 20 year love affair with the river I have given up a prime week.

I believe NG used to fish the Welsh Dee, and he "improved" some pools on the lower Conwy which didn't turn out to be too successful either.
