Malcolm,
He must have done some serious earth & rock works for such a number of pools to have been changed for so long. Although I don't know the river, I would have thought that time, floods, etc should have brought such pools back the way nature intended, as it is a much more powerful force than man's tinkering efforts.
However, it is sad to hear of such messing with nature, most especially by those who clearly understood very little about it.

I'm a great fan of Sidney Spencer mainly because I fish some of the places he once did. I particularly enjoy Newly From The Sea as well as Salmon And Sea Trout In Wild Places. I find Falkus's Sea Trout Fishing far more concise and less pedantic than his Salmon Fishing book. Incidentally, anyone listened to his recordings (called Salmon and Sea Trout Fishing) made available by The Flyfisher's Classic Library on CD?

I've heard Sidney Spencer is a good read.
I should have mentioned Kingsmill Moore, "A Man May Fish", at little gem about Irish salmon & sea trout.

AA Luce's Fishing and Thinking book... so bad I took a perverse pleasure in shooting it to bits. I told the story to someone and subsequently received another copy as a xmas present.

Since I am sure the book was sent as a joke I wouldn't have minded shooting that copy either, but didn't shoot it in case I received another copy! It is in a box with a number of other such valuable books. What amazes me is that I heard it has been reprinted, I just couldn't get into the book at all.

One of the more unusual books in my library is John Bickerdyke's Days In Thule With Rod, Gun And Camera (1894) about salmon fishing on a little Hebridean river.
Interestingly, he beats Falkus by almost 100 years by referring to salmon that repeatedly rise to a fly but won't take it or follow a fly and nip it as 'Salmo Irritans'.
Falkus referred to this as a 'Hamlet' fish - one that could not make up its mind.
Bickerdyke used a little long-shank double hook with the fly tied well up the shank to stop fish from nipping the fly tail.
Falkus used a similar idea with his Secret Weapon pattern - with a treble hook attached to the rear of the fly.
Goes to show, there's nowt much new in fishing.

Thanks for all the nominations everyone. Any more for any more? Im off abroad on holiday as of Sat for 2 weeks so wont be allowed (by her in doors) to check in here. Options.... 1. I could create a general poll with what we have by COP Thursday but wouldnt have the time (or knowledge ) to create polls by category. 2. Wait till I get back, get categories, some help sorting the nominations into categories then create the polls. 3. Some willing volunteer sorts out closing off nominations and creation of polls in my absence. As I have the attention span of a grape I'd suggest we go with option 3 as I will probably forget to come back to this when I clear customs. Perhaps we need a pre-poll poll voting on.. 1. Nolon should extract the digit and finish what he started. 2. Nolon should grease up his lapels and make for the hills. Should I go buy the vaseline.....(strictly for shoulder use only)? Cheers, Nolon.

Since the maximum number of choices in a poll is 8, perhaps we should change it to favourite author or have a seperate poll for fly tying books (Headley/McKenzie Phillips etc), creative writing (Currie etc), instructional (Falkus/Little etc), technical (Malloch etc) and lastly perhaps regional books (chaytor etc). Perhaps in this way, we will stand a better chance of arriving at an overall short list.

I am at a little bit of a loss why Arthur Oglesby's book "Fly Fishing for Salmon and Sea-Trout" does not get a mention. Considering the fact that it was from Arthur Oglesby that Hugh falkus gained much of his salmon fishing experience from when they were friends.

I suspect the main reason for the book failing to appear is that it is generally considered to be nothing remarkable, even for its time. That the book is inexpensive to the point of being virtually given away, surely this is a indication that it is not sought after.
I didn't like his book, but if you enjoy it then good for you. Many of the books I have are often considered to be useless, many cheapies that I've picked up for 50p or so are absolute gems to me.

Bit predujiced here but Falk could write Oglesby needed a great deal of help with his . Indeed over the years I had the privelege of fishing with his co author on the flies book John Buckland ,a veritable fountain of knowlege and great fun to be around . I am at a little bit of a loss why Arthur Oglesby's book "Fly Fishing for Salmon and Sea-Trout" does not get a mention. Considering the fact that it was from Arthur Oglesby that Hugh falkus gained much of his salmon fishing experience from when they were friends.

Dear Owen and Fruity,
With Owen going awol, how does Fruity feel about starting to sort the nominations into a useful format. I still think that we can encourage more people to name their favourites. Fruity seems to have a good working knowledge of books, authors and forum polls and I think would be excellent at that. Sorry to dump on you so publicly ;D Owen could always pick up the reins on his return? ATB Robbie

Dear Robbie
We didn't have that many other nominations or peoples Top 5, but I have already taken the step of starting a poll covering fly tying books (In the book section). Hopefully people will find it easier to give comment this way, if there is a good response then I will do one for say fishing instruction books, this will whittle down the number of books.

Fruity, Thanks for taking the initiative. For a poll on authors/books, would 2 or 3 polls posted immediately after each other work? With all the books mentioned put on the polls and then it can be self policing as it were?

Robbie At the minute, just the one poll doesn't seem to be working. I will give it some time and perhaps try another tomorrow....say with the title "Greatest Ever Salmon Fishing Book" in order to catch a few anglers.

fruity,
Thanks for picking this up. If you need me to do anything when I get back, beyond staying out of the way as you look to have it all covered, let me know.
Cheers, Nolon.

So far we've got 7 votes on the fly tying related books, hoped for more but there is no rush.
