We occasionally get " My rivers better than yours " popping up now and again.
So where would you expect our rivers to be positioned come the end of the season on,
1. Availability 2. Value for Money 3. Performance 4. Friendly
Cheers

with the back end proper still to come its hard to say but can the river tay justify the price tag? also the esks? i love the tay but the price structure seems way out of line? more so when you can fish one of its tribs for a fraction of the price in saying that by reports the earn is having a bad time of it and the esks are lovely rivers but over priced for spate rivers? Dee had a decent spring by todays standard? annan and nith are just starting to kick off (nith more slowly) spey i cant comment on northern rivers cant comment on seem to get on to see if they are worth the money tweed same as the tay but its the river to be on this week all in all i would rather have a OK day and spend less than £50 for a days fishing than take the chance of spending £100-250 for a bad days fishing

Sorry ACW, I do not look at other sites for the simple same reasons you have mentioned !!!! Scotty, I can see where you are coming from. As individuals we will all like this better than that but it does not mean it is true or correct. Look at the difference / opinions regarding tackle I prefer the middle beats on the North Esk and would gladly fish these before any other River / beat simply because i like them better. Cheers Hornet

1. Availability 2. Value for Money 3. Performance 4. Friendly Joe, If these are looked at in reverse order: Friendliness: there are probably very few if any rivers / beats which are not run in a warm & friendly manner, whilst I do accept that some individuals may have had an especially bad experience from time to time, I don't recall much naming & shaming or gripes going on. Also, there are other factors under the umbrella of 'friendliness' which may come into play when recalling particularly good beats; could be a really affable ghillie or staff, a warm welcoming hut, easy access & parking, close to home etc..., and these may all add value to that fishing experience, and colour our memories - may even forget that we caught nowt!! Performance: this I take to mean catches or contacts with fish. Again, anyone can hit a beat or river at an unseasonably poor day or week, or have a bonanza time. The only real objective measures of performance has to be the official catch returns for the river / beat, and that may or may not be factored into the decision to go to that river / beat at that particularly chosen time. If anyone had a particularly good day / week on a beat, then that may colour future decisions to go back there (to repeat the exercise!), but hopefully, a bad catch day / week shouldn't necessarily put one off from returning to try again. Value for money: that's quite a tough one...what may appear to be value for money fo some would appear to be completely out of reach (financially) for others. In terms of catch returns per £ spent, this can be relatively easy to calculate on an individual angler basis (# fish caught per season and £££ spent on beat / license, travel, accomodation, gratuities, equipment etc..). But looking to future visits, one has to look at the average catch returns for that time of year, versus the total anticipated £££ to be spent in undertaking that fishing. An example as an illustration is a 5 year average catch return of 12 fish for a month for the beat, and each of 5 rods paying £100 per day. To catch 12 fish costs (just for the beat fees) £500 per day x 25 fishing days for the month = £12500, or £1042 per fish. That figure rises some when you add in travel, accomodation, gratuities & incidentals! ?Value for money? - to some, yes! Availability: an even more tricky one to answer. There are club & syndicate waters where Joe Public just can't get on in a lifetime! There are public waters where it may be 'combat fishing' at peak times. There are beats on some rivers which days / weeks are let 'in perpetuity' to the current 'tenants' of those days / weeks, as re-booking is virtually automatic from one year to the next. And then there are the rest of the rivers / beats. All in all, a very complex proposal to decide best river / beat. We all have our favoured ones, those that we can fish, at the price, and that have been 'good' to us. There is probably no real answer. Mike

Good answer Mike but as you can see it gets very complicated. I simply think it is to hard to determine.
" The Best River " is there such a thing ?

1. Availability 2. Value for Money 3. Performance 4. Friendly There is probably no real answer. Yes there is !! ....... just whang it oot and let it come roond - where 'er ye micht be. Don't get 'het up' or angst yourself as to whether or not they are 'catching' ower the hill, doon the road or ben the hoose. The river you are on at any given point in time should be the ONLY place to be in terms of your mindset (far out !) Dinna fret there Hornet loon - they'll maybe let you back to Park one day ..... but in the meantime yer jist gonnae hae 't be content wi whut ye've got - which is some no bad fishing if memory serves STip ps - actually, this thread could quite easily develop as a whole "other mans grass" or "green cheese" debate. As ma auld grannie used to say "Stip, its no whit ye hiv, its whit ye dae wi it ! - now go and be a lad and git me a couple 'o bonnie troots - mind the fehv Woodbine" - ah, the memories.

I was also thinking along the lines of "the grass is greener.." analogy, but you lost me on the green cheese bit ... ?reference to shooting for the moon?? Yes, those 'magical' places we have never fished, Delfur on the Spey, Floors,...you get the idea....hold that mystery of being some of the 'best' places. When it comes down to it, just being out fishing has to be the best place! Mike

Ref Floors on the Tweed....
My old boy was recently staying at a hotel in the Borders that shall remain nameless. It was just after the marriage of the Dukes daughter. A vast marquee had been erected in the grounds by a firm using sub-contractors. The foreman of the gang got talking to my father in the bar one night during the aftermath of the wedding and the removal of the super-structure.....
"A f****ing idjeet member of my team was hoofed off the job yesterday. He liked the look of the water at the bottom of the grounds and thought he would have a cast or two one morning while no-one was around. If he had bothered to use his eyes he would have seen the CCTV camera tracking his every move"
Dad never found out if he was kicked off the beat or thrown into it!
At least he can claim to have fished one of the finest beats in the world!!!!
