Traveling home with ex forum member Sinkingtip from a good days fishing with Speyducer on the North Esk we got chatting about rod catches from our rivers.
How many times has the same fish been caught and does this come into account when the final tally is made.
Has forum members felt like they have caught the same fish twice or it has probably been hooked before on a lower beat etc.
What's your thoughts.
Cheers

Can't say it's happened to me with salmon, Hornet.
Tell Tippy we're all missing his unique sense of humour, and I really do hope that he comes back soon.

As Salmonking says a fish would need to have some distinct markings if you were to know for sure it was a fish which you had caught before. For a fish which had been pereviously caught by someone else it would be evidence of previous hooking or a deliberate method of marking. Cant honk it has ever happened to me.

Gotta be close to the most famous re-capture: First Time: Tent pool, E. Litza river, 11.7.07 Weighed in @ 42lbs 120cm long; tagged & returned Who's the angler?? Second time: Rugged Rock pool, E. Litza, 28.8.07 Weighed in exactly 45.25lbs about 1-2 hours after capture, and probably 45.5lb when landed (weighed dead, as it didn't survive the second fight, and couldn't be recovered sufficient to be released). The tag confirmed the earlier capture. Thus, the original capture weight was retrospectively agreed as 46lbs, and the original measurement deemed incorrect, as the fish couldn't gain 3.25lbs during the six extra weeks in the river! When you only have access to the first two or three pools of the river it doesn't happen that often. If the fish hasn't been chapped on the head when caught - the old days - then it probably wouldn't hang around for too long afterwards, unless of course the water is extremely low. I am not aware of catching the same fish twice. Sometimes it would good if I even caught it once I too am disappointed to hear that STip has gone awol I do not know the reasons but hopefully we will see him back. highlandfisher

Thus, the original capture weight was retrospectively agreed as 46lbs, and the original measurement deemed incorrect, as the fish couldn't gain 3.25lbs during the six extra weeks in the river! 3lbs of water absorbed by the expanding milt as it ripens??? (also noticed from the link that it had got 3cm longer, kype growing?) Two years ago there was a good run of springers into a little river down here and they got held back for a week or so in the lower pools by very high water. A lot of fish came out of these pools, and went back in , and one or two of them did start to look familiar. I'm sure I caught one again that had been landed at the start of the week, it had a distinct scar on it's flank. I thought research with tagged fish somewhere (Dee or Tweed?) had shown recaptures were generally less than 5% but I'm not sure. Not sure why the SinkingTip has sunk but I too hope we see him back. The figure for the Dee when they were tagging the fish was that 9% were recaptured.

It looks like a cold looking Chris Tarrant! Great to see that salmon fishing is a celebrity sport. ;D
PS. did you know that Paul Witehouse got his famous dithering old man character from an old salmon fisher that he came across in Iceland?
