We know the roles that backing plays, and the often quoted "it took me down to the backing". So, who has had a serious amount of backing taken off the reel, how much line taken for how big a salmon? Has anyone had it taken down to the arbour knot?

I think I've only twice had a lot of backing taken off the reel. The most I've had off the reel was this year at Tilbouries streams on the Dee in May. The fish took the fly and headed down river porpoising on the way. By the time I to the bank (only about 10ft) and climbed up the fish had about 100-150m of line out I had to run down the bank trying to recover line and only managed to land the fish some 500+m down from where I hooked it. Even then I had my 16ft rod bent double and managed to almost straighten a heavy gauge double I never got a picture or length of the fish but it was at least 17lbs and covered in sea lice. Stuart

I have never been down to the arbor knot but I was fishing on the Brae Water a few years back and Colin the head ghillie told me that one of his guests on the previous week had hooked a lively one and it took all the line off the reel. It was a lady and it was her first trip accompanying here husband. Everyone was trying to coach her to stay calm and just follow the fish when it got down to the arbor knot and everything would be OK. Unfortunately when it got to the arbor knot that was the end of it because the husband did not tie the knot correctly it somehow just unravelled ;D ;D Imagine the row he got on the drive home and I will bet she still tells everyone whenever the subject of salmon fishing comes up ;D ;D ;D ;D salmo

Never seen my backing since the day I put it on the spool All the rivers I fish are so small that a fish can't get that far without going around a corner or over a fall so it's always a case of hold or bust for me. Andy

Only once has it been down to the arbour knot for myself.
The river was fairly high and running fast. I hooked into what was a fresh fish (springer?) on the other side of the river. On hooking it, it made its way upstream for one or two yards but then headed off down stream at speed.
Only having the 13 footer and in no way able to follow the fish any length because of trees, I just let it run and watched it go down into the short rapids. After a few seconds with the line fully out there came the ping, Leader snapped and fish gone. (probably yesterdays leader and a poor knot ;D)
Ah well
