I had a couple of hours to kill on Friday morning so nipped out the back door onto the Don. While fishing down through the Bankhead pool.I seen another angler heading up in my direction,as he got nearer I noticed that he was set up with a 9ft trout rod. Now I know there is nothing new in that,as I will use my 10ft Hardy on some Rivers come the warmer weather and lower water conditions in the summer, but I do find it a bit strange in the Spring. What did suprise me though was that he was fishing a size 12 greenwells glory. Well as we all know the Trout season does not open on the Don till April, but this chap assured me that he was fishing for Salmon and that all he ever used was his trout rod and size 12 Greenwells.I find that rather strange and have my own opinion but I would like to here your views.
Bill.

Bill, sounds similar to some grayling anglers on the Welsh Dee who use czech nymphs which resemble an allys.

Definately sounds like he was trying to bend the rules a bit to try and get an early cast at the trout. I have caught the occasional salmon and plenty of sea trout on the Greenwells, but usually from about mid April onwards.

I'd have kept a very close eye on him Bill. My guess is that he's trying it on and seeking a few early brownies or sea-trout kelts. You do of course occasionally catch salmon on Greenwells or similar trout patterns but not in March If he was being genuine, which I doubt, then I'll bet his fishing log is in pristine condition and he doesn't need to buy many ink refills for his papermate. You should have invited him to join the forum, it appears either way that he has a lot to learn... ;D (sneaked in when I was typing Graham - we are sceptics eh)

the Don takes great care of its broon troot so reporting him to someone would do no harm? if he was genuine he would have no problem being quizzed and having his bag searched? i wouldn't anyway then agen if went salmon fishing at this time of year with that set up i would expect the men in white coats to come

Czech nymphs I never thought of that :)Maybe I will try an Okey Dokey ;D.Anyway I will be keeping an eye out for him when I am walking the dog. I too have caught Salmon and Sea Trout Graham while using a Greenwells and other trout patterns, but like you say not until about the end of April onwards would I think that was likely to happen. Bill

His explanation sounds completely unconvincing to me. He wasn't an off duty politician by any chance ?? ;D
