A friend has taken up fly-fishing for trout and has done really well so far on lochs. This season he really fancies river fishing for brownies. Do problems arise on salmon beats when one angler would prefer to fish for trout or doesn't it matter. It means we could have days on the river together. I realise he'd have to pay the same but would it be frowned upon? Would beats prefer ALL rods to be fishing for salmon? I know I'll get him to take up salmon fishing one day but for now he's mad for the trout.
Cheers

Should not be a problem on most rivers. Some will sell trout permits at a discount. Others like the Deveron charge a flat rate for the day regardless of the type of fish you are targeting, but at the best time of the season for trout, April to early May, the price of a permit is fairly low. The Don is another good option for both species.

Thanks for reply Graham. One additional point..Say on a six-rod beat, would he be regarded as one of the six? My guess would be YES.

It really depends on the beat. On some beats he will count as one of the rods, other beats sell seperate trout tickets. For instance on some beats of the Don, they have two salmon tickets and two trout tickets. When I first started to seriously get into salmon fishing in the 1980's I came from a trout fishing background. So when I went to say the Deveron in April, I would always have a trout rod set up in addition to my salmon rods. At that time I would generally fish for salmon in the morning until a hatch of flies started and the trout started rising. I would then target the trout until the rise finished, usually about mid afternoon and would then go back to the salmon fishing. It is a good way to introduce someone to salmon fishing.

Good idea Graham. I know he's the type of bloke that will love salmon fishing.
