Orri’s message; Norway is now a NASF priority
Norway is a very important country for the future of Atlantic salmon. This is why NASF has given increased priority to its Norwegian work over the last five years.
Norway has some of the world’s most wonderful salmon rivers. Some are still in good shape and provide wonderful fishing, such as the Alta, Lakselv, Orkla and Gaula. The state of others, like the Lærdal, the Driva and the Vosso, is dire.
NASF has heavily supported the great work of the river owners in the Trondheim fjord district in recent years and believes that without this magnificent joint effort the situation there would be completely different. Tremendous work will be needed to restore other Norwegian rivers and NASF fears that some once-mighty Norwegian rivers will never recover.
Norway and Scotland are now the only remaining countries with interceptory net fisheries for salmon. The Norwegian nets do not only take salmon destined for Norwegian rivers. Much of their catch would otherwise return to Russian, Finnish, Swedish and Danish rivers. In permitting this to take place, Norway is failing to observe the principles of the International Law of the Sea and it is a disastrous policy as far as Norway’s own rural economy is concerned. NASF and its partners in many countries are working hard to persuade the Norwegian government to stop this destructive netting,.
Norway is the base for an evergrowing global aquaculture industry that causes continuing problems for wild fisheries wherever that work takes place. The industry must become more environmentally sustainable because it does great damage to wild salmonids in Canada, Scotland, Ireland, and Norway.
It is for these reasons that I have now established a Norwegian Foundation with the specific purpose of working to save Norway’s wild salmon stocks. Last year NASF was honoured to receive a Goldman Award money for international conservation and we are giving a considerable portion of the money that goes with the award to this Norwegian foundation. A strong and dedicated Norwegian team has been assembled to run this new organisation. They need the fullest support that salmon anglers can give them. The first step you can take to help speed progress is to make generous bids at this year’s auction!
Yours in Conservation,
Orri Vigfusson

Oil Painting from Stryn!
The famous Stryn, with its demanding pools and currents, is famous for its big and strong salmon. Yet not as numerous as they once were, the painter managed to catch a 35 pound + salmon this summer and we assume it inspired the creation of this x by y cm oil painting! Sebastian is currently a student of Odd Nerdrum, and we leave it to the audience to reflect on if this adds or detracts to the value (HA‐HA).
