I bought a new Shakespeare Oracle 15 ' this morning so went up to river to test this afternoon. Initially I didn't like it as it has a slower action than my 14' Orvis. However, I eventually got to grips with it and by the end was very happy with the line I could put out.
The first problem encountered was that I had picked up the Rio tips instead of the SA's so i had to use a mismatched line. As the river was in such good order I was properly setup with inter tip and 5' fast sink leader and an Ally shrimp bottle tube. Half way down the first pool I got a nice take from a lively fish. Turned out to be a very silver kelt but for a while I thought I had christened the rod in style. Released it and went back in to find that my reel was free wheeling. The cog that engages with the ratchet had come loose! (That is the second time the Daiwa 812 has broken during a fishing day). However I carried on fishing and soon hooked another very silver kelt although a much smaller one.
I tried another pool before going back to the first pool to test a different setup with the floating tip and inter leader. A few casts later I thought that feels funny! Here the floating tip had come off on the back cast! Luckily it was floating downstream towards me (good back cast placement eh!) I managed to collect it on the way past and decided enough was enough. The braided loop had parted from the line (note to self: redo all loops).
Glad to have ironed out these issues before the Spey trip!
