Awoke this morning to discover that my young grandson was trying to refit my camera with the campact flash card which he had managed to pry out of its slot whilst I was asleep. Sneaky youngster's hands get into ANYTHING when you are asleep, unless it is locked up in a safe or other anyone-proof compartment.
Problem is that he was trying to fit it into the slot sideways, and, of course, it wouldn't fit!
After appropriate chiding, I took the camera to find that the CF card would no longer fit even the correct way round!
By trying to force the card in the wrong way, with the rocking & pushing, four of the many fine locator / connector pins for the card were now bent.
What's the problem, you say? Digital cameras still using CF cards went out with the ark, there being now several generations of better, smaller & more efficient cards (SD, XD, etc), and even if the camera was irreparable, replacement would be cheap (if not cheerful!).
Unfortunately, the camera in question is my prized Nikon D2X, and not exactly replaceable for under £150!!
However, after careful micro-engineering, & without taking the whole camera to bits, I managed to re-align all the pins, and after about 1 hour, the memory card fitted nicely & camera fully working! Phew!!! I had envisioned a rather hurried & embarrassing visit to my local Jessops for an expensive repair!
Those with digital devices which still use the CF cards (& other dinosaur equipment) just beware that the slot for the card has about 30-odd minute & delicate pins which just don't like forcing of the card into the wrong position. The same scenario could occur when trying to re-fit the card with cold & shakey hands at or near the riverbank.
