I thought it was illegal to sell rod caught salmon - The advert is for line caught salmon
I have seen long lining in some Norwegian estuaries but did not realise that it still went on in the UK. Is it common around the UK?

This establishment is about 10 minutes from my house. I visit it and ask a few questions, or I may just pass the info on to the Ayr DSFB bailiffs.
There is no line fishery for salmon in Scottish waters other than rod and line fishing.

Yes well spotted Yorkshire Esk. Previous replys are quite correct in saying there is no line fishery for salmon in Scotland, other than that which is sporting, rod and line. The advertiser is either breaking the law in selling rod caught salmon, is in breach of the trade description acts selling farmed salmon as wild. Or he may be selling legally or illegally net caught wild fish as line caught. Line caught like dived scallops and creel caught prawns are phrases beloved by the Greens.

Just because they have changed the wording on their website doesn't mean they have changed there way in how the salmon was either caught by line or whether it was infact farmed. It beggs the questions of whether they are now selling farmed salmon or line caught salmon. If they are selling farmed salmon then surely they cannot call it line caught. If it is line caught then they cannot sell it at all. FREEDOM ASSURED SALMON is what it is called now. How is that defined?

nothing to do with how its caught but some companys sell "scottish smoked salmon" this only means it is smoked in scotland, the fish can be from any country unless it says smoked scottish salmon

I emailed them asking for clarification and the owner actually left me a voicemail. It seems he didn't know the law and the fish concerned are rod caught from a local river. Unbelievable!

There is an element of Ayrshire anglers who still operate in the old ways when fish were for food or cash. Thankfully this attitude is dying out and squeezing the buyers will hasten that process. Hopefully they have learned the err of their ways and that word will spread to any remaining purchasers of salmon. I may try and interest the local press in the story as I took a printout of their website before it was removed.
