Ive managed to get a heap of head markers that would suit spey lines rated 9-11.
These markers are ideal instead of using a marker pen to mark the head of the line.
£4 inc postage to forum members
please pm me for more details.

The markers look very similar to those produced by Airflo and issued along with Jock Monteiths lines. A very valuable asset to a one colour spey line and what's more with that length there is enough for 2 lines.
Do you get a free line along with the marker Salmonchamp - after all they tell me there is a credit crunch............... ;D

I removed the blighter from my Monteith line - hated it rattling through the rings.

I am always open minded to new ideas but the sleeve looks like it would restrict the line shoot if you had to bring the head into the rod top when restricted to by the pool width or D loop obstructions. Do you need such long lengths or do you cut it up into little short lengths?
The best marker I have found is the permanent black pen. It can fade after a while but it is easy enough to remark. I always mark the running line so that it is at or around the reel or first rod ring for the shortest rod that will be used for a particular line.
One of my friends is a professional instructor and both APGAI advanced and FFF THCI. He uses a coding system that marks the yards on the shooting line so that when he draws it of the reel he knows exactly how much he is shoot for a particular rod. I find that approach a bit OTT but it shows that the marker pen can be used in a variety of ways.
Having the marker at or near the reel is also useful when fishing into the gloaming but clearly one could use the sleeve and just strip back until you feel it hit the tip ring.

Having the marker at or near the reel is also useful when fishing into the gloaming but clearly one could use the sleeve and just strip back until you feel it hit the tip ring. Salmo Having used this marker over the past couple of season, my view is that it doesn't restrict the line shoot at all but it can be a bit off-putting as you can clearly hear it 'chatter' through the rings, which I must add it doesn't damage in any way. You make a very valid last point Salmo; you can feel the marker as it enters the tip ring as a reminder of where the head is during the darker hours. If thats the case with me, I've pulled it in too far as I always have the marker outside the rod with the monteith line. As a matter of interest, my marker is 5". I have a permanent red-pen mark on my carron 75', which needs a touch up once a season. Maybe not permanent then........... but my Carron 85' has no mark as I don't feel that I require one. Thanks for prompting an interesting debate Salmonchamp Each to their own guys; I'm happy with both methods. typo
