No I don’t mean high as in when some Weegie has dumped his “gear” in the Clyde but altitude A bit of a pointless question I know but it is the close season. So how high can a salmon get in the British isles? About 1400 feet is as high as they can go in my neck of the woods. What is the highest anyone has caught one, I’ll open the bidding with 750 feet up on Exmoor. Andy

On the Dee they can head up to the lower slopes of Ben Macdui, about 2000ft above sea level.

I must be around the 1000 ft mark, Tomatin distillery is at 1028 but I cannot find the river height.

Salmon may be able to run higher than on the Dee, to the top reaches of the River Roy on the Lochy system.

So how high can a salmon get in the British isles? In his book "Salmon Stories", Jack Chance writes of a salmon seen by two stalkers in a small burn at Rothiemurchus in the Cairngorms, at over 3000ft. I must be around the 1000 ft mark, Tomatin distillery is at 1028 but I cannot find the river height. The OS map shows spot heights of 299m (980ft) by the old A9 bridge upstream of Tomatin, and 287m (941ft) at Raigbeg, just below the new A9 bridge. This may be useful: www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/index.html833 ft or thereabouts on the findhorn. My only Findhorn fish came just below the mouth of what is marked on the OS map as the Funtack burn (I thought is was called the Moy burn), coming out of Loch Moy. That seems to be at about 870ft.

On the Tay, OS map shows 40 (assume meters?) above sea level.
Didnt realise we were also competing vertically so will be looking for stilts over the winter to boost my 2009 standing. May also help me cast a bit further....

833 ft or thereabouts on the findhorn. Tomatin is quite low down on the Findhorn, fish run to Coignafearn, and above, well into the Monaliath mountains and about 1300' above sea level. I have caught a fish there many years ago, in a pool where three burns come together to form the Findhorn. The burns are accessible to fish but are treated as sanctuary and spawning areas. On the Spey system I'd have thought the highest water the fish can reach would be at the top of the avon, in the shadow of Ben Avon.

I too have been studying the maps, can salmon get up the White Falls on the Roy? I've never seen them other than in a photo but they look like a stopper. In his book "Salmon Stories", Jack Chance writes of a salmon seen by two stalkers in a small burn at Rothiemurchus in the Cairngorms, at over 3000ft. From a look at the map it appears that only two small burns that eventually drain into L. Morlich reach the magic 3000 feet (914 meters), would this have been the place? The River Eidart that joins the Feshie goes well past 3000 feet but again it looks like it has an inpassable fall on it. www.geograph.org.uk/photo/266612Does anyone remember an article in T&S about twenty (?) years ago about a party fishing the Feshie in spring (April or May I think) and catching fish right up to 2000 feet. Highest i could think of was Rappach/Mulzie water off the Einig, but they max out at 1200 ft approx.
