In my experience, being in the right place at the right time is the single most important factor for success in salmon fishing.
Just heard of a good example of this today. A member of my club popped down to the Welsh Dee for an hour after work and caught 3 Salmon of 11lbs 8oz, 13lbs 8oz and 14lbs 8oz. All bars of silver as well!
I doubt if more than 10 salmon come off this beat in an average season, but he obviously timed his visit just as a good run came through.
Nice when it happens, ain't it!

Could not agree with you more conwyrod, despite all the technology of modern tackle, depite a well stocked fly box or three being there when the fish are in a taking mood is the key to success. Taking mood! dont ask me, it could be water conditions atmospheric conditions time of day whatever. Most likely it will be on a prime beat of a prime river at a peak time of season. Who knows as we have seen some remarkable catches from club waters this past ,'bad' summer.

Im a great believer in being at the right place at the right time,, I had a great example of this erlier this year,
Another forum member was fishing the beat below me,,we both had started at roughly the same time,i'd had two fish in the first hour,,then the bloody phone wouldn't stop ringing,,just had another,,,,another fish,,lost one etc,,i,d lost another two, before i,d reached him further down stream,,then all of a sudden, the fish stopped taking,,but they haddn't,,that was a big run going through both beat's,this was constant action for about 3 hours on say a 3 mile stretch of water, we fished on and had the odd pull, but nothing compaired to the erlier action,,,we were at the right place at the right time.
