I thought it might help you to list some of the different fox furtails we stock and their characteristics.
We also stock fox masks, plate (body fur) mink tails and bucktails as available. We are waiting for new stocks of Shadow and Bucktails which have been difficult to obtain this year..
Fox Types:
Shadow Fox Shadow Fox has less under fur and nice long soft hairs. The whites are excellent tails for dyeing and produce bright vivid colours….
It is a premium grade and commands higher prices at the fur auctions..it is also getting more difficult to obtain.
Tail Length: Average 14 to 17 inch
Hairs: 3 inches at the back of the tail.
Texture: very soft (dyeing does not seem to affect the texture as with Blue Fox)
Blue Fox Blue Fox has darker guard hairs and has thicker under fur, which I understand many use for dubbing. The hair is slightly thicker than the Shadow
The Blue Fox is more commonly supplied by retailers as medallions or packs.
Tail Length: Average 14 to 17 inch
Hairs : 3 inches at the back of the tail.
Texture: Thicker than Shadow and can be a little crinkly.
Marble FoxMarble Fox:
This is a fox that has been little used in fly tying but is certainly one growing in popularity.
The tails are extremely large and predominately white with some Black to Silver shading. It has less underfur more like the Shadow in texture and superb for dyeing.
Because its white it will dye to good vivid colours
Tail Length: Average 16 to 19 inch
Hairs : to 4.5 inches at the back of the tail.
