Mrs and I went to the Ayr races yesterday for the first time. I thought it was a six race card so as we were about to leave I saw horses for the last race on the bookies boards. I checked the programme and sure enough there was another race and one of the runners was called Knockando. As I am starting a new job there tomorrow I thought I'd better back it, even though I'd blown my budget without any return on the first six races. Mrs however was well up with two winners. Being the complete novice punter I studied the form, which for Knockando was not good: unplaced in its first 8 races the odds were 9:1. Hacked off with not having a winner I hedged my bets and put some on an better priced runner. Needless to say Knockando romped home by eleven lengths . So I ended with a winner but I should have put everything I had on it People have been wishing me luck for my new job, but with good fortune like that I don't think I need it! Mrs has just announced that she is treating me to tea out with the her winnings BnC

The Wills familly (Owners of the Knockando Estate) own a few race horses. But I do not think that is one of them, some of them are/were named after pools on the river, Craigsteel is probably the best known most sucessful.

Wish you all the best in your new job. Thanks for all you have done with the Ayrshire rivers trust. An amazing job in the few years that you were here.

I can't remember the name of the pool just upstream of Carron on the lower Beat (just down from the big hoose) but I had a cracker there in May 2009. You will be a happy man working on that lovely water: I hope you get the occasional cast! Adipose

That would be Craigsteel, a very nice pool, but very lumpy wading.

That would be Craigsteel, a very nice pool, but very lumpy wading. The very pool Graham. I remember the tough wading now you mention it, but my fish, drawn out from the calmer water on the other side of the main stream, gave me a welcome dose of amnesia about the wading. Great pool though. The round pool above it, especially the tail, looks a likely place for late evening sea trout. Is that right?
