So as we enter 2012 I approach a rather significant birthday this year. (begins with a four ends in a 0 ) If you were to treat yourself or be treated to a rather special bit of kit to celebrate/commemorate said event what would you choose?

Is a week on the Kharlovka too much to ask for ? That would be my wish. I'll hit the same milestone in about 16 months, but I don't reckon that I'll be Kola-bound.

Still 2 1/2 years to wait for me, but i think i'll be asking for a prime week on the Spey, she could always throw in a new custom Meiser MKS if she wanted. ;0)

I think I would head for South American sea trout. I have been hearing noises that Russia is not such a great destination now......not that I have been or ever intend to go.

I'd go for a nice fly reel, an expensive one that was out of my normal price range.
A Hardy Perfect or St George Hotspur, perhaps.

I would second that, a good quality reel will last a lifetime, whereas a rod will date as newer/better materials become available.

The same milestone coming up for me this year and I thought long about where I would go and how nice a beat I would treat myself to but in the end I have plumped for my "home" river for a few days with close friends and family. I have long since admitted that far flung destinations and spending thousands of pounds on a weeks fishing is way beyond my reach, I reckon I will get just as much pleasure out of good company in familiar surroundings as anything... ...I really am getting old! Having said that if some nice availability comes up some time this year I may still use the excuse for a wee treat for a day, just wondering how many times I will get away with it! ;D

I reckon that if you are not super-rich and used to expensive beats then the pressure of having spent all of the money would spoil the week unless you caught either lots and lots of fish or the fish of a lifetime. I do intend to enter the Alta lottery next year, just in case.

Yup, you've got to be in it to win it. It costs a bit too.

Way past the big 'four - O' myself but with the bus pass due in the next few years I might just treat myself to a totally beat up (but mechanically sound) Land Rover Series 3 SWB just to see how quickly I can make it from the Cambus'O May meeting place to the main hut at the Long Pool. The dash board would be festooned with a broad and varied selection of flee's and fag packets and the mud would be an inch thick all over - nice.

That is a lovely picture and one of my favorite tracks along with the track on the other side through the dark forest to Glashan. Why not ask Fergus if he needs a deputy ;D

All this talk of a 40 birthday is depressing enough, without me thinking about my next major milestone which is, er flipping 60.
Just where do the years go.
P.s I know I don't look my age. So no embarrassing comments.
Oh go on then.
