Came across this hole/burrow on the riverbank today. It caught my eye as the frost on the grass surrounding was much thicker then the rest of the grass. Also noticeable that the blades of grass in the middle were frost free. My first thoughts were that it was due to an animals breath but there were no tracks. Was it due to the residual warmth from the ground? Never noticed this phenomenon before. BnC

obviously some creature in there Brian and the heat off its body is keeping the entrance frost free. Stick a terrier down and see what happens

Helluva wee Otter Kenny ! ;D Stoat / weasel ? Baby otter! Too near the water for a weasel me thinks and otters don't need a big bolt hole Andrew of Angus!

Did you stick your hand in it Brian ? What sort of depth are we talking about ? Looks to be about fist size.

I did put my stick in but nothing came out! It would have been big enough to get your fist in so I reckon an otter would have got in there no bother. No tracks in the frost but if it had laid up all day that could be a viable explanation. There may have been another entrance to the burrow at river level, a daytime holt?

Looks like a rabbit's bolt hole to me which they would only use in extreme emergencies. The heat of the bunnies underground would make it look as it is. I recon!
Any signs of holes in use nearby?

If there any evidence of rabbit holes nearby, I would agree it certainly looks like a bolt hole to me.

P.S I hope Your forum name might suggest you have a wee stock pile of my favourite drink. If so! You and me will get on just dandy.

I wonder if it's anything to do with moles or mole catchers ?

I wonder if it's anything to do with moles or mole catchers ? How does that work? The mole catcher makes it nice and warm at the hole mouth then when the mole pops out to sunbathe the mole catcher grabs him! More likely Hobbits
