www.wimp.com/tiniestengine/ Gotta love this! The precision and effort that went into it is mind boggling!! OPERATIONAL V-12 DIESEL ENGINE THAT FITS IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND. This is not CNC technology; this guy made everything at home on his lathe and drill press. Took 1220 hours (a year and a half?) to make the 261 pieces. Note the end-loaded crankshaft into the block (like an Offy), 12 individual cylinder heads, TINY rods and pistons, dual "underhead" cams with pushrods to rockers in the heads. And, he did break-in using an electric drill driving the crankshaft! Even if you're not an engineer, you'll love this!

Because he does not tie flies or fish and this is his thing. How many hours do we put in standing in cold water only to release the thing that we were after ? I think he would ask us the same. What a piece of perfection.

Malcolm
Your such a spolier. I think it was an interesting post. The USA seems to have so many guys doing this hand milling lark etc, making their own reels form a block of aluminium etc. That V12 is a work of high craftsmanship.
Maybe the TV really is poor over there which gave him the motivation.

Malcolm Your such a spolier. I think it was an interesting post. tb Very interesting post but why would someone take so much time to build something which though beautiful is totally useless. If he built something bigger at least he could use it ...........on a push bike for instance. At least salmon fishing keeps me outside.

I guess they do it for the same reason people put ships in bottles or build things of matchsticks. Not for me, though
The guy would probably be a great Classic Salmon fly tyer of he chose to turn his hand to it - which are also comparitively useless. Would you whirl £25-£40 worth of materials about on the end of a line only to have a fish chew it up?

It must have been built for a mini, Malcolm. This is a proper V12 sound:

I listened to a Mosquito taking off a good few years ago (It stopped in Stornoway on its way to America). THAT was the real sound. I enjoyed the video of the guy building the engine. No idle hands there...

Part 1 of an excellent , and quaintly British , documentary on the history of the Mosquito right from the development stage.
Parts 2 , 3 , & 4 are there too.
Well worth a watch for the old b&w film alone.
