Just read a blog where the author intimated that colder conditions would be more conducive to Spring fishing. I personally would like a nice warm Spring where fish can be spread throughout the system as opposed to being confined only to the lower beats. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think colder is better now we are into March?

Normally March can be a pretty cold month. The problem with warm weather in March, and it seems we are going to get some quite soon, particularly up here in the North East of Scotland, is that it generates snow melt and if temperatures rise above 10C the resultant rise in river levels can be quite significant. Combined with rainfall this can put the rivers virtually unfishable for several days at a time. Personally I prefer to see daytime temperatures in the low 4-7degrees centigrade with night frosts to slow down the snowmelt. This winter has been unusually mild and with water temperatures on the Spey and Dee hovering around 40F and above, fish have travelled much further upstream than is normal. The catches on the bottom Spey beats and the Lower Dee from Banchory downstream have been virtually non existent this spring with most fish being caught in the middle river beats. Usually it takes a pretty big water temperature rise to take fish into the upper reaches of any river. This is usually in mid to late April. This year may be different.....we shall see. March is looking like being warmer than usual Kerry so perhaps you will get your way. The question is do you want the sun on your back or takeable salmon in the pools ? I suppose it also depends on which part of the river you fish ?

Worked outside all my working life and would say that March is the coldest month of the year. The north east wind goes right through you. Am sure that a hard winter is best for the trout and possibly the salmon. There is very little food to be had in the winter so cold keeps the fish dormorant Bob
