Been doing a bit of tidying up today and the kids came across this photo! They've been pissing themselves laughing all afternoon! This was my very first fish on the fly. I had spun all day on the clubwater at Colmonell (17th June 1978) and I remember asking one of the older guys if the water was too big to fish the fly and he replied 'It's never too big as long as the clarity is right' and added 'It can't be any worse than this' as nothing had been caught all day other than a few sea trout. I only had a few casts with a single hook Brown Turkey and all of a sudden it all tightened up and became alive. Remember it like yesterday - fish weighed 17lbs - Been hooked ever since! Anyone else got photos or a tale of their first on the fly? SL

looking at those Flares Gordon, the kids ain't the only ones pissing themselves laughing. Looks a cracking fish. I'm sure iv'e a pic o my first Fly caught Salmon kicking about somewhere. There's probably a laugh to be had at my attire too.

This photo was taken before the advent of flares I think. This was my goodself aged 19 taken on the banks of the Don at Manar in May 1967.Both fish were taken on the fly in the Short Wood Pool and the Chapel Pool. The car in the background belonged to my father( Austin A60)
