Dear all, great to join these forums. Hello.
I was wondering if any of you could perhaps advise me? I'm going salmon fishing for the first time for the first week of September.
Wye river: middle hill, upper bigsweir, lower symonds yat, Goodrich court.
Firstly, do you think any fish will still be within these lower beats?
Secondly, any tips, tricks, advice please - I'd love to hear your thoughts and experience.
I have a 10 weight two-handed soey as well as an 8 weight single-handed. Various small flies in black and red. Shrimpy-looking things.
Thanks very much indeed,
L

Welcome, not fished the Wye, but I guess a red fly will work on any river, take a few different sizes, smaller if it's low or clear. Biggish water to try and work a salmon fly with a single hander, I'd use a double hander myself. Tight lines

Gold bodied Willie Gunn is my favourite for late fishing on the Wye. But as Burnie says, have something red as well!

Thanks very much for your help. Any specific suggestions regarding technique: surface and edges I'm assuming?

I am afraid that I do not know the beats that you mention but most seem to fish with a sinking tip or at least an intermediate tip (having said this, I did lose a fish on Sunday on a full floater). Depending upon conditions, I would also take a full intermediate line just in case.
When you say "edges", do you mean fishing on the dangle? I have never caught a fish on the dangle on the Wye but doubtless it does happen.

Thanks DT. Sorry to hear of your loss Edges - I meant edges of the bank, rather than the deeper water?

Hi Learner
Almost all my fish have been taken in the middle of the river, i.e. in deep water. Do not wade too deep, however.

Thanks David - much appreciated. I'm pleased to hear there are some fish there at least!

That is truly shocking - i thought the Wye and Usk (WUF) controlled the fishing,is this not the case?

Thats very poor, especially after such an early start. Only fished Bigsweir on the Wye, lovely beat and very helpful owner. I don't think its available through WUF but I might be wrong as its been a while. Rob
