Only fished Dunkeld house and Cargill before both in huge water 10ft above at Dunkeld and 5ft above at Cargill resulting in heavy tools 30g salmo . I prefer using a Devon as a don't get a sore back and neck a can cast and leave it to drift round. would have a go at Catholes or Stobhall but neither seem to do bank only tickets and a dinnae really like the boat much. Any advice on beats water levels for drifting a Devon welcome.

Fished a bank only ticket at Catholes last October. Good fly water, but that was low water conditions.

Fished a bank only ticket at Catholes last October. Good fly water, but that was low water conditions. Aye could only see one price for Catholes on fishpal this season so never bothered booking. Most advertise 2 prices bank only or boat. A would probably take the fly rod along but i don't often spin now a days and it is fairly enjoyable on the Tay unlike the Don where you spend half the day snagged on all sorts a crap. A see newtyle is offering bank fishing at 30 quid early on and Dalmarnock so cant grumble at that price.

There's certainly no shortage of water available January - April and all at a reasonable cost. Agree that Dalmarnock or Newtyle would be decent shout for the money..... as would a few others. These days its a a gamble at any time of the year - even more so during the early part of spring.
Good luck.

Thanks A will brush the cobwebs off the Daiwa CF98 and spool up some new 20lb mono. pop in past Somers tackle for some copper lined Devons and some lead wire for the trace tae make sure the devon swims level. Think a still have Spiral wts to get it down a tad. A had a casting lesson a couple years ago with JM at upper Kinnaird Jock took ma down in the boat tae a good looking flee pool on the LHB before heading to another spot on the RHB. Looked to be good looking runs for a cast with a Devon there but nae sure if it is flee only or depends on water height. Also remember it pissssed it down lol but jock was a great must a been out for 2 1/2 hours in torrential rain .

From my distant memory there is a fair amount of spinnable water on Meiklour. Thanks Early prices for bank fishing look very reasonable and looks a cracking beat on the website. 40 quid we the vat on in February. Just need a tad of luck with the water levels.

I think they do an opening day offer for anglers to visit on opening day with all proceeds from day rods going to charity. Might be a good opportunity to check it out. I believe fish were caught from the bank on opening day in 2017.

Your right Mel, although I've not heard if they are repeating it this year - quite possibly.

Tempted to get some Jan Fishing myself- not necessarily opening day. I can’t think that I have ever fished before Feb 1st. Accepting the futility of it of course...

Used to do it quite often in my younger days but like a bit of comfort these days. Have had some horrendous January days on Tay and Helmsdale a few years back.

You can spin pretty much the whole of the Tay. Devon either weighted or floating will have it's place on every beat. Even Islamouth isn't fly only in lower water until late spring. Only fly only bit is the fly only sections of Stormont club water. Regarding boat v bank rod prices. The norm is one rod price per day for a beat and you take your chances as to who's in the boat - and if you don't want to fish from the boat you don't have to. Bank rod & boat rod is a relatively new split. Hope you get out & enjoy it.

Going to be a fair amount of snow on the hill tops already so water levels will be a lottery..But get the Devon fishing low and slow and always a chance.

Took a day at Meikleour and upper Islamouth yesterday. Fished it from top to bottom from the bank with the spinning rod (Daiwa CS98 11ft) a proper beast oh a spinning rod arm was aching almost as bad as using the 15 footer that said drifting a Devon round without cranking means no back or neck pain. Also had a go with a Hansen namsos what a terrific action it has.
Great beat really enjoyed it cracking day with ghillies Calum and John always felt like i had a great chance from the bank on this beat and as it turned out the other lad fishing landed a cracking 24lb fish in the castle pool after a handful of casts.. Great to see yet another quality Springer landed the Scottish rivers may be down on numbers but you cant knock the quality some cracking fish getting caught.
The 2nd pool down looks a cracking fly pool from the right hand bank so will certainly be heading back for a go at it with the flee rod. A few croys on the beat also look good for the flee.
If can figure out how to add a photo or 2 i will do its a stunning place to fish and walk about.
