What a beast that was.
I was watching Frodin's film last night on the Alta "Storlaksen Rike"
Well recommended if you can stand the repetitive scenes of him casting a long way and connecting with some really big fish ;D

There's an older film I borrowed from the Stavanger Bibliotek.
'Drømmen om Alta'
Norges Største Lakseeventyr, en film av Arne Nævra.
This is a good one as well.

Hi Storlaks,
It is on DVD. I bought my copy here in Norway - when I get time I will look up the producers and post the details. It is not in English but the fishing is absolutely spectacular.

When I was on the R Kola, Russia, early June this year, there were confirmed reports by our guides (no pics) of a 36kg (80lb) salmon taken by one of the local Russians on the lower river, near Murmansk, that year ie late May/early June '07. The method of capture was 'uncertain' it may have been a net, but it could have been by a spinning lure. Mike

Sounds like a bit of Russian bull that, they could have got it on a bent pin as well,i tend not to believe stories like that, stories for tourists

May have been "Russian bull....for the tourists..", but those 'tourists' managed to land 9 x 30's and 2 x 40's in that week of 165 fish, with several very large (>>35lbs) fish being lost/broken, and one fishermen getting his size 4 Loop tube double hook being crushed flat just by the bite of a very large fish which he didn't hook into.

I should have worded that differantly, visiting anglers then not tourists.Salmo read the first post if you want i will translate the net newspaper that states that, that particular fish is between 35 and 37 kilos. It is fishermans stories i take with a pinch of salt.As the record rod caught salmon is 79lbs,as i believe, stop being so touchy boys, sorry if i touched a nerve, tact is not always my forte

Considering that the local Russians are only interested in the meat from any caught fish, and methods of capture may not be to the ethical standards of non-Russian visitors, and that photography, and official (unshakeable source) witnesses of such captures are unlikely, the such 'fishy stories will aboud. I won't tell you, then, about the 50kg fish taken from the Kitza lake - Kitza is a tributary of the R Kola. Or the 84lb fish taken from a lake on the Rynda system when ice fishing in the winter Also, considering the Alta is perhaps one of the most guarded (maybe not the right word), exclusive (did I mention expensive?) salmon fisheries in the world, it's not surprising that there aren't any reports (or even rumours) of even more huge fish (ie >>37kg) that swim no longer in such waters. Anyway, the knowledge that such fish may exist & run such rivers is what makes us go and fish for them, perhaps? Mike

Stu47,
October Trout and Salmon has an article on big salmon and a reference to Alten.
Is this the same as The Alta?
