I want to 'test the water' and see if there is sufficient support & interest in order to run a Spey Casting Clinic & Meeting for forum members.
Proposed would be an arranged meeting river venue, at a weekend/long weekend, probably in early season '08, with instructors & experienced casters to assist newcomers and others needing some casting assistance, as well as testing out rods, reels & lines (perhaps even a few flies!), and rod/line combinations on the water, and new techniques & tips.
You will also meet others from the forum, putting faces to names, and exchanging views & perhaps a dram or two!
If there is sufficient support & interest, this can be taken forward as to location/venue, timing, instructors & securing rods, reels & lines for testing.
Please PM myself, or any one of the admin team, if you are just tentative and don't necessarily wish to post on the open forum on this matter.
I would wish such a meeting to be very inclusive, ALL welcome.
Mike

A dram or two you say? I'm in. I'll go and read the rest of it now

Excellent initiative Mike and an opportunity not to be missed IMHO for those wishing to have a good time, put faces to names and improve their casting. I for one would wholeheartedly support such a venture. STip

Great idea, if it works in the USA, why not here.

I take it will be somewhere central, Aberlour springs to mind.

Malcolm You might have to push yourself a bit and travel further south, perhaps Grantown? I thought it was a Speyclave, I never thought it was semi-tropical bonefish fishing.

Malcolm , and others just a reminder ,London speycasters have been doing this informally on the sub tropical Thames at chiswick neer the exotic budweiser brewery ( gotta be exotic once the home of Watneys red Barrel ). Dam good fun . Just a thought ,the Spey Day name is registered to Robert Estlund ,who runs a spey board based on the great lakes. thats the reason they are called Claves

Somewhere north of Aberlour late July/early August, with the fishing thrown in would be perfect. ;D

Beware Dana has registered all things Spey. www.speypages.com/legal notice: "Speypages", "Spey Pages", "Speyclave", "Spey Clave", "International Spey Clave", "Speypages.com" and "Speyclave.com" and the Speypages logo are trademarks of Dana Sturn, Sean Ransom and Speypages.com I will bring it up with the Chairman of the Spey Fishery Board and no doubt they will change the river's name so they do not upset Dana the inventor and trademark holder of all things Spey.

Great idea, very interested.
Anywhere North of Newcastle would be fine for me as I don't want to have to fork out for sunscreen, what with xmas just round the corner.

Hopefully he hasn't registered "Spey Casting" as well!
"Clave" just means - a meeting of those persons with a general interest in the same thing anyway.
Perhaps we should call it "The Real Spey Clave" and, of course, hold the meeting & have instruction on the Spey river, and even do some Spey casting!
Alternatives would be "Speycasting Clave" or "Spey Casting Clinic" or "Spey Meeting" or "Spey Clave UK"
Maybe Dana has only registered these in Canada anyway!
As we're not interested in 'branding', I don't think it matters much.

It is not possible for anyone to claim copyright on a name or title, or on any commonly used words of phrases. The following is an extract copied from the US Copyright website : What Is Not Protected by Copyright?Several categories of material are generally not eligible for federal copyright protection. These include among others: • Works that have not been fixed in a tangible form of expression (for example, choreographic works that have not been notated or recorded, or improvisational speeches or performances that have not been written or recorded) • Titles, names, short phrases, and slogans; familiar symbols or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering, or coloring; mere listings of ingredients or contents• Ideas, procedures, methods, systems, processes, concepts, principles, discoveries, or devices, as distinguished from a description, explanation, or illustration • Works consisting entirely of information that is common property and containing no original authorship (for example: standard calendars, height and weight charts, tape measures and rulers, and lists or tables taken from public documents or other common sources) see: www.copyright.gov/circs/circ1.html#wwpSimilarly, a trade mark would not be granted for "marks which describe your goods or services or any characteristics of them, terms that have become customary in your line of trade, terms that are not distinctive, or a combination of these. "see: www.ipo.gov.uk/tm.htmWhile a specific design or logo may be protected as a registered design, the owner of the logo cannot claim ownership of the words used in that logo. That would be ridiculous. I am certain, therefore, that we may use any name we like to describe a website, book, organisation, meeting or event, with absolutely no fear of legal challenge. I for example, would be perfectly entitled in law to create a website and call it "Spey Pages" or "Spey Clave" or "Spey Day" or "Speypages.com" or any other name I cared to choose. If forum members wish to advertise a "Spey Day" or "Spey Clave" or "Spey Casting Meeting", that would, in my view, be perfectly legal. Claims by owners of websites that they own words as trademarks or have copyright on titles should be dismissed as no more than so much hot air.
