What do members think about the different problems in fishing large rivers Tay and Tweed, compared to smaller rivers such as Ericht and Whiteadder. I find that on small rivers ,as water levels fall ,the intermedtiate leader needs to be replaced with a hover or floater just to get the fly to travel. No doubt a similair situation can occur on larger rivers fishing a mixture of streams and deep pools. Certainly playing fish given plenty of backing I would prefer a larger river where there are generally less chance of bankside snags and tree roots.

The thing i like about the smaller rivers is the freedom you have,,, fishing the bigger rivers ,,gillie in tow,,no offence to any gillie's out there,,,you could end up with a raw deal, espcially when there are maybe 4 or 5 others fishing the beat,,,also i find many beats over roded,,and as we have seen posted on the other board,,high tipper's,,and regular rods i think get the cream,,when fishing the big rivers, there is a kind of un naterul feel when being told where to fish ect,,all a bit regimental,,but i still enjoy the big rivers,,and the craic is usually good. Now the smaller rivers are a total different menu,,,turn up go where you want,,and generally ,find the lies and the fish by yourself,,to me much more exciting and skillfull,,one draw back on asocation waters there may not be 4 or 5 ,fishermen there but maybe 10 or more, this is a challenge in itself,,come out top's in amongst that many and you'l get a real belt of satisfaction,.there are smaller waters out there, that's not asociation of course,,where less rods are likely,,and the banks are often overgrown, and places hard to fish,,this is my type of water,,you get a real sense of the wilderness so to speak,,,,,although i like, turning up at manicured banks ,fishing huts, gillies, and the advice that comes with,,it all seems a bit false,,,i like my wild places,on the smaller rivers.

I'm of the same opinion as SK. I love the smaller rivers for the same facts. No pressure from zillion of rods being on the beat. No time to be kept etc. Turn up early and leave late is my kind of beat.
I do like fishing the bigger river like the Tay and Tweed, still to fish the Spey. If there is a choice then the smaller river will always be my first.
Cheers
