Having spun and bait fished for the last 3 seasons, i'm determined to give the fly a go this season. Likely haunts are the Usk, Wye, Severn and Devon rivers. As i don't manage to get out on the river that often my cautious side tells me to buy cheap, so am thinking of Shakespeare Oracle 4 15' rod + Magnum D reel. If Man Utd win the Champions League (which means a long term accumulator pays up) I am tempted to spend more and buy Greyflex Mk2 15', Vision Koma + Rio Windcutter multi tip line. Would welcome any views or advice.

Hello salar,
avoid the Vision Koma and stick to the Magnum or take the Pfluger Trion (and some lessons as well).
Petri and tight lines,
Peter

Thanks for the advice Peter. Just been reading some other not so favourable reports about the Vision Koma. Time for a rethink.

I have a koma and a Trion, and I'd agree the latter is a much better reel.
The Shakey Oracle rod has had excellent reviews.
The Greyflex mkII seem to have had good reviews, but for the same money you could be looking at B&W Norways or Guideline rods, which are all poular rods.

Used my vision koma for the second time the other day and when i went to change it found that the foot on the reel had snapped in the reel seat. Avoid

After an operation on my back in 2007 I've dropped down to a 13ft Shaky Oracle from a 15ft rod. I also use the Magnum 140D reel which is adequate for me with my disabilities.
I fish a middle beat on the Lune, which is not wide and can put out 20 yards with ease, despite the wobbly legs. I had the outfit tested by a qualified instructor and he managed 35 yards with no problems. Probably ideal for a novice and you can work up from there as gain experience and become more proficient. Getting some lessons is a must.

I tried mine out on the South Esk a few weeks ago and couldn't fault it. I thought that I'd struggle to get any sort of line out with it (due to believing that a 15 footer was far superior) but for the smaller rivers (ie not Tay or Tweed) it does the job superbly. I've not had much experience with the 15' Oracle but had a few casts with one last year and found it to be a little too stiff for my liking compared to my Greys GRXi 15'. Getting some lessons is a must. Good point, well put.

15ft oracle works ok for me when fishing larger rivers, what salmondan says underlines the difference in opinion of individual anglers regarding rods as I would consider my 15footer to be inclined to butt action rather than stiff.

Totally support the Oracle. Finish is a bit disappointing but it is a great rod for starting out and will probably last many years.
One of my longest fishing partners is a devoted Thomas and Thomas fan and was finding his 15fter just a bit long for some our Dee beats so he bought the Oracle 13ft. He also wanted to teach his son to spey cast.
He fell in love with on the first day and it his rod of choice for the Upper Dee and the Don.

The 15' Oracle is not for me I'm afraid, bought one a few weeks ago but have sold it already. I bought it, despite my reservations over the action in the shop, as it gets almost universal praise. The action is too slow and I just didn't get on with it. I also had a look at a friends 13' Oracle the other day, it is only 18 months old and the cork in the handle is full of pits, not pretty or comfortable.
Not my cup of tea.

That's a shame about the build quality. The sort of problems I saw were minor aesthetics which should not have caused problems for use. Maybe they have reduced the build quality in their more recent products to improve their margins?? If so it will backfire badly. salmo

My Father fishes with a 14ft DH Greyflex M2 and it is a fine rod. Nice and light and can handle fish no problem. The reel he uses is the Greys GTX 4 with a plastic spool system.
They are a fine combination and did not burst the bank.
I have the SG in 11ft and a Orvis Battenkill reel. I did have the GTX on it but felt it was slightly to big for the SG.
I would not hesitate in recommending this rod or reel.
Cheers
