just purchased a 150ft spey line can you shortin this from the reel side so it fits the reel and would this affect its performance, had to take most of backing off to get it to fit

What weight of line and also what reel are you using George, Probably better off getting a larger reel that way you will have the full line and plenty of backing incase you hook that fish of a lifetime.

Hi Superdod,
If you can still get one a Pfleuger President (Shakespeare) 11/12
will take your line plus about 200 yds of Cortland Micron backing.
If you can't get that the Pfleuger Trion 11/12 will easily take the line but with a bit less backing.
Both reels sell for less than £100 and have very good reputations.
They are both large arbour high capacity reels and made from forged aerospace aluminium with a good disc drag.
Hope this helps. You don't really want to have to cut the line.
Cheers

The Trion is a great value reel - although you wouldnt think it to look at it holds more line and backing than a much more expensive and bigger looking Orvis Mach IV.
In fact the cheaper Summit also holds more backing and large Speyline than many reels..
The Vision Koma is another option..dont cut the line
