recently myself & another angler witnessed some extremely coloured fish being caught & killed the permit states these fish should ideally be returned, 1 we seen we were told it would not survive returning as the flee was in to far i dont eat salmon but have been told that these tartan fish would not taste nice any way i personnaly fully dissagree with taking coloured fish & think the rules should be changed to return 100% of these

Neptune you never spoke a truer word. As the other angler on the bridge I went on later to Norham where I saw the Ladykirk boatman work for three times as lone as that guy to remove the hook from a fish about the same size. Difference was he held the net in the water and the fish swam of almost the instant it was taken from the net. No that fish would not have been fit to eat but I expect some of these chaps never see a decent bit of protein so would not know the difference.

Sad to hear that there are idiots out there chapping coloured fish. Can't see the benefit of taking these fish.
I would have snipped the line as close to the hook as i could then let it go. There would have been a chance that it would have continued to spawn.
Does this stretch of water have river bailiffs?.

Generally they are hot smoked or added to soup. In the UK where you normally cold smoke fish and rarely hot smoke I would think a badly coloured fish is next to useless. Totally agree that the best thing would be to cut the line. CF

Hello Hornet the Assoc has a very diligent watcher who I understand only receives expenses, but again he cannot be everywhere at once. Same with the official bailiff force they have much ground to cover although they are aware of what took place that day. It could be the case that until a fish qualifies as a baggot, or a kelt it is not an offence to take them. Unfortunate.

But what is coloured? Does the permit show an unacceptable colour with guidance in order to help the angler decide? For anglers who only fish for salmon in the Autumn and who's only experience is catching coloured fish the decision is at best, subjective.
Often the reality is that they just want salmon to eat and don't care about logic or rules...therefore beyond make it difficult for them to justify keeping a salmon, forget logic and ban them. I can't imagine they are health conscious and after the "low fat meat" and "salmon caviar", at worst they are after some cat food and "jam".

SK did not say Hornet, but his mate told Sk that if I had told HIM it was full FFFword disgusting to kill that fish he would have put me in hospital.

Threatening people when challenged about killing a coloured fish is just not on.
The river bailiffs need to sort this out mate, not worth getting the hassle or the threats.
Cheers

People who repeatedly do this soon get to be known. Clubs , riparian owners, their employees etc should speak with offenders and if they don't change their ways refuse them further access and put the word around.

i dont know them personally just spoke to them in passing Just returned to Neptunes post on coloured fish, one of these guys definitely had a Tynside accent, perhaps even both which of course does necessarily not make them members of TAS. Tweedsider
