That you can't fish on a Sunday for Salmon and Sea Trout is known to me. However, I was surprised to learn that you can't start fishing on a Monday till 6 am I am wondering why this would be?

Hi Greenman,
Don't know where you got that information but I believe that you may begin at 00:01 on Monday morning, I certainly have in the past.

It will vary from beat to beat. Some will not start until 9am. Legally you can start immediately after midnight on the Sunday night.

I think the watchword is to contact the appropriate authority or knowledgable person, or ghille (as applicable) for a particular Scottish water to ascertain what applies to that particular beat before commencement of fishing.

Hi Greenman - it sounds like you are talking about smaller day ticket waters - usually with a head of sea trout in them - and at this time of year ?? On some / most of the Esk beats it is fairly standard practice to define the period of let as being from 6am to 6am. This, IMO, is by far the most sensible timing particularly during the short night summer months. Some beats operate a midnight to midnight or 3am - 3am regime neither of which are as practical or 'complete' as the 6am to 6am set up - but thats another debate. The '6am Monday' issue is to accommodate Saturday rods who would have had to cease fishing at midnight on the Saturday. This allows them to return at midnight on Sunday to complete their 24hr period of let up to 6am - fine if you are local, a real drag if your not. regards STip

Thanks for the comments everyone. Yeah, I have been told by the beat ghillie that I can't start before 6.00, the impression I was given was that this was the law rather than a beat custom.
