What has been the single best thing which has advanced your salmon fishing in the last season '07?
It could be a rod, line, other gear, clothing, map, access to new water, casting instruction, fly, spinner etc.

Fishing with good casters, who have guided me towards a better technique and more modern equipment.
An LPX, combined with a carron line and a few polytips has become the weapon of choice. The old Hardy Gem, combined with second hand (un named )lines is now reserved for friends!

Same for me. I would estimate at least 75% of my fish were hooked with the fly moving quickly whilst handlining, even in fast water.

Handlining? Can you elaborate? Is that just plain stripping the fly or two handed retrieve like they do for Stripers in the US?

It can be anything from a steady figure of eight retrieve to as fast a hand over hand retrieve as you can manage.

Yup, I hate it when the Ghillie gives you secondhand buds - I always take my own cotton buds. M

Best thing for me was getting in touch with an experienced fishing guy named Tom. Who has given me enough info to get me started in this world of salmon fishing. BR gerry

Has to be the really wet year we had bringing runs of grilse during what would normally be a very lean time of year. Let it rain I say, let it rain.

Tweedsider Absolutely TS - but not when a fair skelp of your summer sport involves the night time sea troots Seemed to spend at least two months solid this year turning up around dark 'O clock only to be met by rising coco on almost nightly basis ..... and bank-high at that ! Canny have it all way's I suppose .......

Hello sinktip yes I know there can be to much of a good theing but that is better than no good thing at all. July saw me at Forres on the local clubs excellent beat, alas the river was almost up to the car parks on several mornings. But returning home our local assoc was in excellent order, last year one sea liced fish this year counting sea trout and grilse 19 and a further 3 less so, most of the former being sealiced.
"Sometimes to early Sometimes to late Sometimes to low Sometimes in spate!"
There 's nae pleasin Aw the fishers some o the time Never mind aw the fishers aw the time"
Regards Tweedsider
