I always enjoy fishing the last hour into dusk, especially if the river has been quiet but you know there are fish in the pools. Staying late paid off for me today, caught this fresh 7lb fish from the neck of a pool - the water was on the low side and I guess it was waiting for dusk to run up a tricky section of the river.

As has been stated before - "dusk" (and dawn) happen to be the time when ALL prey creatures up the ante - salmo salar included. Cracker of a fish John - flee ?

Graham, I think the next (last) 4 weeks of the season is usually the best time in N Wales - although fish stocks are relatively low, we start to get regular stream of fish coming in and a few residents stopping in the pools. I think this slows down the running fish and gives us a chance to catch them! Andy, the flee is a claret/brown PB Pig on a 1/2" copper tube- I've had a lot of success with this fly over the last 3 seasons, mainly fished deep in fastish water. It's quite a bulky fly, I think it's bulk makes it easy for the fish to see in rough water. I've tried tying them up, but must admit I have more confidence in the ones I have bought from Donegal flies: Basically a claret body with gold rib, claret hackle and a light brown arctic fox (?) tail with bristles and long gold tinsel/maraglit tied as a long tail. Perhaps someone could do a SBS and I'd save a lot of money!!!

Nice fat un John.. They've all been fat and fresh off the Conwy this year Col, which makes a nice change. Rumours of a 30lb fish lost on the lower river this week, which is enormous for the river. Unfortunately the river is now too low for fly, and there's no decent rain forecast.

Lovely fish there, John, and an interesting wee PBP!
May have a go at a SBS for it, seeing as you've had great success with it over the past few seasons.

Success again today at dusk. Fished the Conwy in bright sunlight this afternoon, lovely water but the fish had their heads down. Last few casts and hooked this slighly coloured hen at 6:30 pm in the tail of a pool: It had a clipped adipose which means that it was reared in the CVFA smolt pond.

Nice one John. No luck for me at dusk on the Teign. When does the Conwy close, end of October?

Hi Rob
Some of the Gwydyr Hotel fishing stays open until end of October, however the section I fish closes on 17 October as it is a sea trout spawning area.
